Bollywood Movies Inspired By International Films

In recent years, the average audience is craving content oriented films, with a strong message or theme as the driving point.  Realising that people are no longer loving movies with women running around trees and heroes lusting after the tragic actress, directors are now looking across international waters for inspiration.  While there are some movies which lifted scenes entirely from foriegn films, there are other Bollywood movies which have been made so well, they do complete justice to the original. Here is our list of Bollywood movies which managed to shine despite taking inspiration from international movies:

1. Zinda (Oldboy)

Perhaps one of the best remakes of an international film, Zinda was inspired from Park Chan Wok’s superhit film, Oldboy (2003 release.)  While Sanjay Gupta managed to capture the essence of dread and doom perfectly in Zinda, he left out the blood and macabre from the original film.  What makes this movie an extremely interesting watch is the fact Sanjay Dutt played his character so well, it was touted to be one of the best performances of his career.

2. Dhamaal (It’s A Mad Mad Mad Mad World)

Fun filled and featuring an impressive star cast, Dhamaal is the unofficial remake of the 1963 Hollywood film, It’s A Mad Mad Mad Mad World.  Just like in the original film, Dhamaal also revolves around a group of people going on a wild goose chase for treasure after a dying thief reveals the location of his loot.  Despite being based on the 1963 film, Dhamaal hit home because of the cast and the way the film was shot.  All in all, both the movies make for a great watch!

3. Chachi 420 (Mrs. Doubtfire)

An adaptation of Robin Williams’s Mrs. Doubtfire, Chachi 420 starred Kamal Hassan in the lead roles.  Telling the story of a divorced father dressing up as a nanny just so he could spend time with his daughter, this movie touched home in both the versions.  Done so well, the Bollywood version was a treat to watch.

4. Sarkar (The Godfather)

Sarkar was adapted from The Godfather by Ram Gopal Varma and when it released, it made a lasting mark.  Sarkar saw Amitabh Bachchan and Abhishek Bachchan play father and son on the screen.  Revolving around the life of a mob family based in Maharashtra, this film did complete justice to The Godfather and the characters.

5. 12 Angry Men (Ek Ruka Hua Faisla)

When Sidney Lumet released 12 Angry Men, he set the bar really high for movies based on justice and law.  Revolving around a jury of 12 men who decide the fate of an unnamed defendant, this movie brought to light the internal struggles people go through when taking a decision like this.  When Ek Ruka Hua Faisla released in the form of a stage play, it made you sit up and pay attention.  Did you know, 12 Angry Men released 3 years after a show with the same story aired on the television channel CBS?

If you think we missed out on other great adaptations like these, comment and let us know!

Sardar Udham Singh, Vicky Kaushal’s next film, finally has a release date.  Based on the life of Udham Singh, a revolutionary who was a part of the Indian freedom struggle, this Shoojit Sircar directorial is going to hit the screens on the 2nd of October, 2020.

Talking about the film, Shoojit Sircar said in a statement, “Yes we will be releasing on 2nd October 2020. Keeping in mind the remaining shoot schedule, the post production process and the time required to complete the film, my producers and good friends Ronnie Lahiri and Sheel Kumar advised this date for a feasible release next year, hence I decided to go ahead with it!”

Making a film about this revolutionary man was Sircar’s dream.  The Country remembers Udham Singh for shooting Brigadier General Reginald Dyer and Michael O’Dwyer, the Lieutenant Governor of Punjab, in 1940.  Udham Singh killed the two men to avenge the death of all the people killed during the Jallianwala Bagh massacre (1919) in Punjab.

Apart from this biopic, Vicky Kaushal is currently working on Bhoot Part One: The Haunted Ship,  which is scheduled to release on the 15th of November, 2019.  Shoojit Sircar, on the other hand, is working on Gulabo Sitaabo, which will star Amitabh Bachchan and Ayushmann Khurrana in the lead roles.

Written by Ritesh Shah and Shubendu Bhattacharya, Sardar Udham Singh is bankrolled by Rising Sun Films.

Stay tuned for more updates.

1) Dance Dance

As we said earlier, Chakraborty was the dance king of the ’80s.  Inspired by Italo disco style of that generation, Dance Dance is a musical directed by Babbar Subhash.  Bappi Lahiri’s music and Mithun Chakraborty’s impeccable dance moves made this film one of the most iconic films of his career.

2) Mrigayaa

Based on a short story, Mrigayaa is a 1976 film directed by Mrinal Sen.  The story revolves around a British ambassador, a hunter and an archer.  Chakraborty’s impeccable portrayal of the Indian tribal archer won him his first National Award that year.  This film is a must watch.

Article 15 Second Song Naina Yeh Out Now,Mango Bollywood,Bollywood Latest Songs,Naina Yeh Song From Article 15,Article 15 Movie Songs,Article 15 Full Songs,Article 15 Video Songs,Naina Yeh Video Song,Naina Yeh Full Song,Ayushmann Khurrana Article 15 Songs

After dropping a truly angry first song from the Ayushmann Khurrana starrer Article 15, the makers just dropped Naina Yeh, the second track from the movie. Quite unlike the first song, Naina Yeh is all about experiencing your emotions and opening up to the person you truly love.

Naina Yeh is composed by Piyush Shankar and sung by Yasser Desai and Aakansha Sharma. What makes this song stand out is, one can connect with the emotions of this song because of the lyrics. The actors maintained themselves in a manner which is restricted, leaving the interpretations largely to the listener. Check out the song here to know what we mean!

The first song released from this movie was an angry rap song called Shuru Karein Yeh. Depicting all the things which are wrong with the world, the first song gave one an idea of what to expect from the movie. Directed by Anubhav Sinha, Article 15 is perhaps one of the most awaited movies this month.

Apart from seeing Ayushmann Khurrana in a brand new light, the story of this film is also quite an intriguing one, with inspiration drawn from a horrific gang rape case. To make things all the more exciting, this movie sees Ayushmann Khurana play the role of a cop for the first time in his career!

Apart from Ayushmann Khurrana, this movie also stars Manoj Pahwa, Sayani Gupta, Kumud Mishra, M. Nasser, Ashish Verma, Sushil Pandey, Subrajyoti Bharat, Ronjini Chakraborty and Zeeshan Ayub in the lead roles. Article 15 is scheduled to hit the screens on the 21st of June, so block your calendars now!
