We as a country love biopics is no hidden secret. From the story of Mary Kom, to the tale of how Subhash Chandra Bose became a revered hero, biopics have a way of pulling all the right heart strings. Here is taking a look at some of the best biopics Bollywood has given the world to date!
1. Mary Kom
Directed by Umang Kumar and starring Priyanka Chopra in the lead, Mary Kom brings to life the struggles of one of the most famous boxers in Indian history. Despite being told time and time again that a woman cannot box, Mary Kom proved everyone wrong and represented her art not only at a national level, but an international level as well. A hard hitting film, this movie talks about how Mary Kom fights back even when she didn’t have the support of those she loved. As far as biopics go, this one did complete justice to the story of a boxer who made her country proud. From wining national and international awards, Mary Kom has truly done India proud!
2. Dirty Picture
Silk Smita, the extremely controversial actress, known for being a part of extremely explicit movies, led an interesting life. Directed by Milan Luthra, this biopic was a tell all, highlighting the loneliness of a woman trying to live life on her terms, but failing to do so because of her choices. With Vidya Balan playing the very convincing role of Silk, the movie also stars Emraan Hashmi in a key role. Showing us how a woman’s powers are stripped despite having the entire country loving her, this particular biopic was an eye opener in more ways than one.
3. Paan Singh Tomar
Directed by Tigmanshu Dhulia, Paan Singh Tomar tells the story of how a retired army officer and a national level steeplechase champion becomes one of the most feared dacoits of the region because of his mother’s death and how the police refused to solve the case. What drives this story home is the way Dhulia portrays the underbelly of Madhya Pradesh. With Irrfan Khan playing the role of Paan Singh Tomar, this biopic did so well, it was both critically and commercially acknowledged as one of the best biopics which came from the world of Bollywood.
Remember the supremely brave air hostess, Neerja Bhanot, who single handedly saved over a 100 people flying on the Pan Am Flight 73, which was hijacked by Pakistan in Karachi? Remembered for the immense bravery she showed, this biopic definitely needed to be made. With Sonam Kapoor playing Neerja, this movie brought to the fore an extremely important point: it is always important to help those in need first and then yourself. Not only did this movie do really well, it also proved to everyone that Sonam Kapoor could act really, really well.
There are biopics about the lives of athletes and then there are biopics which tell the story of men changing the world. PadMan falls under the second category of biopics. With Akshay Kumar playing the role of Arunachalam Muruganantham, this film showed the story of a man aiming to change the way women bought sanitary pads. With such a hard hitting tale, this biopic received a lot of mixed reactions. However, it was still a story which needed to be told and even through all the negative reactions, it still made the kind of impact it was supposed to.
Biopics are made because they tell stories of heroes from the past. If you think we missed out on any other great biopics like these, comment and let us know!

India’s Most Wanted Movie Review
Director: Raj Kumar Gupta
Cast: Arjun Kapoor, Prashanth P. Alexandrr, Rajesh Sharma, Shantilal Mukherjee, Asif Khan and Gaurav Mishra
A Raj Kumar Gupta directorial, India’s Most Wanted shows how 5 officers led by Prabhat (Arjun Kapoor) track down India’s most wanted terrorist, Yasin Bhatkal. Without using weapons, guns or any kind of monetary support, the team of officers track and bring to justice India’s most wanted terrorist.
Inspired by true life events, India’s Most Wanted tells the story of how officers not only nab Yasin Bhatkal, a terrorist and the founder of the Indian Mujahideen. This movie showcases the hunt for Bhatkal renamed Yusuf, and also depicts the massive gaps with the way Indian law enforcement agencies deal with crime. The movie opens to a group of five officers who get a tip off about the whereabouts of Yusuf and they swear to bring him to justice in under four days.
Unlike other crime thrillers, this movie shows the officers as five ordinary men with no fancy frills or over the top gadgets. However, while the story is solid as it goes, the movie lacks the tension and drama one would expect. The underplaying of the officers seems to go against the plot and not work with it, making the movie seems slightly long and winded.
However, while the obvious tension is missing from the film, the fact that all the officers live with the fear of death at the hands of Yusuf keep you hooked. Filled with songs and different scenes of worried characters, the movie builds up to a nail biting climax.
What works for this movie is the way Raj Kumar Gupta uses a cast which perfectly portrays the ordinary life of the officers. Prabhat (Arjun Kapoor) plays the role of the leader who takes it upon himself to capture Yusuf.
All in all, the well rounded way the actors and director Raj Kumar Gupta, work makes the film a good watch. Telling the story of unsung heroes and silent officers who make India safe, India’s Most Wanted, tells a story which needs to be heard.
PM Narendra Modi Biopic Review
Director: Omung Kumar
Cast: Vivek Oberoi, Manoj Joshi, Prashant Narayanan, Anjan Srivastav, Darshan Kumar, Zarina Wahab, Rajendra Gupta, Boman Irani
Just like the name of the biopic suggests, PM Narendra Modi is based on the life of Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi. Chronicling the beginning of his life as a tea seller at a railway station, the movie maps the political journey of the Prime Minister. The biopic climaxes at the point where Mr. Narendra Modi swears in as the Prime Minister of India in the year 2014!
Despite the release of PM Narendra Modi being delayed by the Election Commission of India (EC) till after the Lok Sabha elections, the release is nothing short of a victory parade. Since the beginning of the movie, the makers have made sure they pay tribute to PM Modi in every way possible.
Every frame is a tribute to the rise of man who was once a tea seller at a railway station who rose to first become a RSS member and then the Prime Minister of the Country. For those who love the man unconditionally, this biopic is a reaffirmation of their faith but, for those who like to watch biopics with a solid dose of reality, will question the finer points.
While Modi is shown in almost god like form, the opposition is shown as a weak and incompetent party. Perhaps what makes a stark notable point here is that Manmohan Singh has absolutely no speaking role in the film. While businessman Narayanan is seen working with journalist Kumar to bring down Mr. Modi, Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi are shown as figureheads with not much of a role.
The only other character in the film who has almost as much screen space as Mr. Modi is Boman Irani, who plays the man responsible for giving Gujarat the Tata Group. Unlike other biopics (Thackeray for example,) PM Narendra Modi offers no points of debate.
Overall, the film is worth a watch if you are a Narendra Modi Ji fan but not if you want to watch a well thought out biopic.
Zoya Factor First Look Released
Sonam Kapoor just shared the first look poster of her new film, Zoya Factor, on Twitter and it looks whimsical.
— Sonam K Ahuja (@sonamakapoor) May 23, 2019
Based on the novel written by Anuja Chauhan in 2008 and directed by Abhishek Sharma, the film is a romcom, which revolves around the life of an advertising agent and her relationship with the Captain of the Indian Cricket Team.
After her last film, Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga, received mixed reviews from both audience and critics, Sonam Kapoor is back with Zoya Factor, which seems to have an entertaining plot.
The film also features the Malayalam heart throb Dulquer Salmaan. This is his second venture into Bollywood, after Karwaan.
The poster showcases Sonam and Dulquer sitting in a cricket stadium and gazing into each other’s eyes. The chemistry between the leads seems to be on point in the poster. Fans can definitely expect this film to be a fun filled entertainer. Catch Zoya Factor in cinemas from 20th September 2019.
Movies To Watch With Your Mother
Despite Mother’s Day gone past us, there are so many ways one can celebrate their mother. One of the nicest ways to celebrate this day with your mother is by binge watching these beautiful Bollywood films and sharing a special day together:
1. Mother India
Mother India depicted the true strength and courage a mother has when it comes to protecting her child. Telling the story of Radha (Nargis) this movie shows how a mother fights all the obstacles around her to raise her children. A testament to a mother’s love and dedication toward her child, this movie should definitely be on the list of films to watch with your mother if you haven’t already!
2. Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge
While this mother daughter relationship might not be something we can relate with right now, what made it stand out when the film released was because of the underlying tone of understanding and secrecy shared between them. Right from the beginning, the way Farida Jalal understands what Kajol is going through and the kind of internal angst she faces, one can really appreciate the bond. As the movie progresses, one can see the relationship grow so much so that when we watch Farida tell Kajol to run away, it breaks your heart. Watch this movie and cuddle up with your mother, because the tears won’t stop flowing.
3. Bend it like Bekkham
So many times in life, we don’t appreciate what a mother goes through. Bend It Like Bekkham shows us exactly like this. On the one hand, you have a Punjabi mother desperate to show her daughter the “right way” and on the other, you have a mother trying to fit her into societal expectations. With both the mothers, there is one thing in common: a daughter who refuses to accept the rules. The parallel relationships make you appreciate all a mother does for you and if you want to tell your mother you understand her, then watch this movie!
4. Nil Battey Sannata
Perhaps one of the sweetest movies between a mother and her daughter, this film talks about how much a mother wants to see her daughter succeed in life. This need is so strong, the mother pushes herself to make sure her daughter studies and comes out a brilliant student. Not afraid of society and ridicule, the mother enroles herself in the same school as her daughter and motivates her in every way possible. So far, this movie is definitely a really well made film about how far a mother can go for a child. A must watch on Mother’s Day!
5. English Vinglish
We live at a time when language is unfortunately a barrier between relationships. This is exactly what happens in English Vinglish.Sridevi plays the role of a mother who isn’t confident with herself primarily because of the fact that she doesn’t know English. Thinking this is a drawback, she holds herself back from being all that she can. When she finally decides to start learning the language, the confidence is so great, it is almost like she transformed into another person. A coming of age movie, this film pulls at all the right heartstrings.
Watching movies like these with your mother is a great way to show her how much you love her. What is your favourite movie to watch with your mother on Mother’s Day? Comment and let us know!
