Sonali Bendre Behl, a truly inspirational person, has been living with and battling cancer for the last couple of months. We have all been around someone suffering from the horrible side effects of this life consuming disease. We have all seen someone we love not being able to do even the most basic tasks of life because they are fighting a disease that never seems to want to leave.

Sonali Bendre Behl has been through this journey, fighting the fight of life, learning you should never take anything you have for granted. When the actress was diagnosed with metastatic cancer, the news shook not just the Bollywood world, but her fans around the country as well. In a country that reveres celebrities as much as they revere God, it comes as nothing short of a catastrophic disaster when they realise someone they have loved from afar is affected with a disease like cancer.

To let the people who are following her on social media know what she is going through on a daily basis, Sonali shared a recent post of her pains and struggles. Detailed and descriptive, this new post on her Instagram page is heartwrenching. Talking about chemotherapy and the struggles she is facing due to cancer, Sonali lets us peek into her world. Talking about how even lifting a finger gives her immense pain, Sonali states how physically and emotionally drained she has been during the last few months.

“I knew that if I allowed fear to overtake me, my journey was doomed. Fear, to a great extent, is born of a story we tell ourselves, and so I chose to tell myself a different story from the one women are told. I decided I was safe. I was strong. I was brave. Nothing could vanquish me.” – Cheryl Strayed, Wild. Over the past couple of months, I have had good days and bad ones. There have been days when I’ve been so exhausted and in so much pain that even lifting a finger hurt. I feel like sometimes it’s a cycle… one that starts off with physical pain and leads to mental and emotional pain. The bad days have been many… Post chemo, post-surgery and the like… where even just laughing hurts. Sometimes it felt like it took everything I’ve had to push past it… a minute to minute battle with myself. I got through it knowing that even though I was fighting a long drawn out, draining battle… it was one that was worth the fight. It’s important to remember that we’re allowed to have those bad days. Forcing yourself to be happy and cheerful all the time serves no purpose. Who are we being fake and putting on an act for? I allowed myself to cry, to feel the pain, to indulge in self-pity… for a short while. Only you know what you’re going through and it is fine to accept it. Emotions aren’t wrong. Feeling negative emotions isn’t wrong. But after a point, identify it, recognize it and refuse to let it control your life. It takes an immense amount of self-care to get out of that zone. Sleep always helps, or having my favourite smoothie after chemo, or just talking to my son. For now, as my treatment continues… my visual focus remains to just get better and get back home. Through this post, one learns some really valuable lessons. It is okay to break down. It is okay to ask for help and it is perfectly okay for one to be vulnerable. It is okay to lean on the people around you and to let them know you are going through a breakdown. Sonali’s post has taught us that struggling through your pain alone is not alright and you are completely justified for feeling all the emotions you are.

However, what is important to know here is, despite you feeling all that you are, you should never let the pain become your identity. The moment you give the pain this much power, it completely takes over your life and does not let you live the way you should. Life is a continuous, never ending test and you only do well if you play by the rules you make for yourself. Let’s take a moment to appreciate the amount of courage and effort this gorgeous actress has put into making sure she lives by fighting hard everyday! Here is wishing the forever fearsome fighter fighting the big fight, a speedy and quick recovery!

With Silsila, his presence in the world of Bollywood was further cemented through his brilliant acting skills. His scintillating chemistry with Rekha quite literally set the rumour mill on fire, giving people a fresh new pair to look forward to everyday! A movie which wasn’t just about love, Silsila redefined the way people looked at and dealt with different circumstances. With the characters being so carefully handled, the movie just made everyone stand up and take notice of not just Amitabh Bachchan, but of Rekha as well!

3. Sholay

A movie which needs no introduction, Sholay was an Amitabh Bachchan classic film. A classic, Sholay was one of the highest grossing films released at the time and ranked first in the British Film Institute’s 2002 poll of “Top 10 Indian Films” of all time. A story about two criminals (Jeet and Veeru, played by Dharmendra and Amitabh Bachchan,) who try to capture a criminal, Gabbar Singh, this movie more than earned its place in the hall of fame. While the film initially received negative reactions when it released, the reviews quickly picked up and people started falling in love with the characters and the attention to detail the film had. Sholay was a film like never before and was perhaps one of the best performances Amitabh gave so far!

4. Don

The first and original Don, Amitabh Bachchan was a class act like no other actor. Playing a double role for the first time in his career, senior Bachchan ruled the roost with his acting skills in this movie! The third highest grossing movie when it released, this movie set the charts on fire because of how well Amitabh pulled his weight in both the roles in this movie. Classified as a golden jubilee hit by Box Office India, Don was an iconic movie in every sense of the word. The line, “Don ko pakadna mushkil hi nahi, namumkin hai,” is still popular even today!

5. Agneepath

This film had a lot of expectations riding on Amitabh Bachchan. The title for this movie was taken from a poem written by Harshvardhan Rai Bachchan (Amitabh’s father) and the film also had an extremely talented cast (Mithun Chakraborty, Madhavi, Neelam Kothari, Rohini Hattangadi and Danny Denzongpa.) The poem written by Amitabh’s father was recited at the beginning of the film and just like Amitabh’s character, the poem gives shape to the central crux of this film as well. With Big B playing the character so well, Agneepath went on to become a major cult movie in years to come!

6. Piku

Telling the story of Piku Banerjee (played by Deepika Padukone) and her father (Amitabh Bachchan,) Piku saw Amitabh Bachchan acing the character. From praising the characterisation, to loving the plot, critics and fans alike loved the movie so much, it became an instant hit the moment it released! While both Deepika Padukone and Irfan Khan added a certain impact to the movie, it was Amitabh Bachchan’s perfect portrayal of a cranky old man which added the much needed gravitas to Piku. Definitely one of Amitabh’s best performances in the recent past!

While Amitabh Bachchan was known for playing certain roles during the earlier part of his career, he grew to play different types of characters in the future years. Bollywood has always been the gold mine of happily ever afters and great endings. However, while most films deliver on the promise of a beautiful ending, there are some which build up to the possibility of a beautiful ending, but end up giving us something completely different. Here’s taking a look at movies which just ended in a different way than we thought.

1. The Lunch Box

A story about two people falling in love despite the unlikely circumstances, The Lunchbox has an ending which makes you rethink the idea of love itself. Two strangers fall in love through letters and when they finally decide to meet, destiny seems to have different plans. While the two hack a plan, things don’t work out the right way. However, even though the initial meeting doesn’t pan out the way it was supposed to, the open ending leaves one wondering whether the two strangers eventually meet or not. Leaving you with an uneasy feeling and wanting for more, The Lunch Box tells a story beyond the cliches and the expected norms!

2. Rockstar

One of the best movies to have been made in the recent past, Rockstar had an extremely surprising ending. A story about a rockstar fighting for his dreams and working on making his hopes come true, Rockstar depicted suffering in the most heart touching way. Despite having everything going the way it was supposed to for the main character, his journey toward the end of the film leaves one longing and wanting for more.

3. Kartik Calling Kartik

Kartik Calling Kartik had all the makings of a film leading toward a happy ending. Kartik (played by Farhan Akhtar,) falls in love with Sona (Deepika Padukone.) A series of phone calls help Kartik overcome his low confidence levels not just at work, but also help him get the love of his life. However, despite the calls helping in the beginning, they start becoming invasive and creepy toward the second half. When the calls start increasing in their intensity, Kartik starts getting worried and tries everything possible to stop the calls. More than halfway through the film, the movie switches tracks in a surprising manner. All the way through, Kartik Calling Kartik leaves you hooked to the very end of the movie!

4. Ekk Main Aur Ek Tu 

With Kareena Kapoor and Imran Khan playing the main roles, most of this film builds up to a happily ever after between the two leads. While the leads get closer because of how they deal with their respective issues, the story leads to a point where one would think they would naturally end up together. However, in a surprise turn of events, Kareena Kapoor’s character tells Imran’s character that while there may be love of a certain kind, the two were definitely not going to end up together. Talk about a surprise ending!

5. Bluffmaster

Perhaps one of the few Bollywood movies with more twists to its name than any other made so far, Bluffmaster is a film within a film. It is only by the end of the film that the protagonist (played by Abhishek Bachchan,) realises he has been part of one of the biggest cons ever! Just as you start empathising with him for everything gone wrong, the climax just pulls the rug from beneath you with a major sweep of surprise! Definitely worth a watch for the anti cliches!

Despite being a period film, this movie makes even one with a black heart melt and fall in love with the idea of love. Both Bajirao (played by Ranveer Singh) and Mastani (Deepika Padukone)  show that even though there was a whole group of people fighting tooth and nail to keep them apart, their love was strong enough to change perceptions. Showing us love knows no boundaries, Bajirao Mastani is the film you need to watch if you are going through a bad phase with your partner.  

7. Maine Pyaar Kiya

The film starts off with a depiction of how Murad (Ranveer Singh) lives. A house the size of a matchbox in a Mumbai chawl is his home. Accommodating a cast aside mother (played by Amruta Subhash,) a grandmother, an abusive father and a new stepmother not older than him, Murad dreams of rapping his way out of the drudgery. The only ray of hope in his life is Safeena (Alia Bhatt,) a live wire and quirky character who pushes Murad to achieve his dreams, no matter what. Kalki plays the role of a music scholar who has just returned from the United States. MC Sher (played by Siddhant Chaturvedi) takes Murad under his  wing and shows him the tricks of the trade. As a specialist in music, Kalki’s character is instantly drawn to the oozing talents displayed by Murad.


Centering around Murad, Gully Boy tells the story of how a rapper tries to break free of the drudgery and poverty in which he grew up,  through rap. While he struggles to make it to the coveted list of the top ten rappers, Murad’s family and friends help in making his dreams come true. Gully Boy tells the story of how an ordinary man becomes the extraordinary Murad through sheer determination and hard work. While rap is still considered extremely unconventional and is not an appreciated music form in India even now, this Zoya Akhtar directorial quite literally tells the story of a man’s journey from rags to riches. Siddhant Chaturvedi’s amazing acting skills as MC Sher have definitely put him on the map of actors for whom to look out .

While parts of Gully Boy may seem slightly familiar (Eminem’s 8 Miles comes to mind,) the overall directorial is nearly flawless. Zoya Akhtar has understood the strengths of all the leads perfectly and used them to her advantage. The dark side of Mumbai is not a side most people are comfortable accepting. However, with finesse and attention to detail, Akhtar manages to capture every alley and every nook without making it seem over the top and unreal.

The power packed performances by Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt are what make this movie so amazing. Based on the story of Mumbai rappers Divine and Naezy, Gully Boy tells an extremely real and hard hitting story. The presence of the original rappers in various scenes of the movie, along with lyrics written by them, adds a sense of gravitas and authenticity to the film. The rap battles are riveting and the script is written so well, there are almost no loopholes through the movie.  

With no major drawbacks to this film, Gully Boy is an all out entertainer. One of the only things which doesn’t work for this is that there isn’t enough of Kalki’s character on screen. If there was, the fight for the different sides would have been a little more interesting. All in all, with Zoya Akhtar’s brilliant directorial skills and amazing performances by all the actors, Gully Boy is worth more than just a one time watch!

After songs like Paisa Paisa and Mungda, Total Dhamaal has a brand new song, Speaker Phat Jaaye, to its roster of great songs! Featuring the nostalgic pair of Anil Kapoor and Madhuri Dixit,  along with pair of Esha Gupta and Ajay Devgn, this song is a roof breaker in every sense of the word!

While the song has the four leads in action grooving to the beats, the track also features Riteish Deshmukh, Arshad Warsi, and Javed Jaffrey in glamorous avatars. Beginning with the lyrics “O meri Lady Gaga, dil tere peeche bhaaga” and going onto words like “Koi aisa song baja, speaker phat jaaye,” this new song is all about fun, frolic and mayhem! Listen to the song here!

Sung by Harrdy Sandhu, Abuzar Akhtar, Aditi Singh Sharma and Jonita Gandhi, the new song from Total Dhamaal is written by Kumaar and composed by the magician composers, Gourov and Roshin. Everything about this particular movie has an exciting twist to its name. From the way the makers are marketing the movie, to the ensemble cast the film sports, everything about Total Dhamaal is worth the wait. To up the excitement ante of the film, the makers will release spoofs of the trailer in not one, but four different languages!

While the first two parts of this series had Sanjay Dutt playing the lead roles, the third part has yesteryear actors Madhuri Dixit and Anil Kapoor sharing screen space after a gap of seventeen long years! Telling the tale of a group of people running around zoos and desserts in search of a grand reward of Rs. 50 crores, Total Dhamaal promises to be a ride worth taking.

Directed by Indra Kumar, the film also stars Boman Irani in a pivotal role. Total Dhamaal is scheduled to hit the screens on 22nd February this year, so don’t forget to book your tickets before they run out!
