Sonali Bendre Behl, a truly inspirational person, has been living with and battling cancer for the last couple of months. We have all been around someone suffering from the horrible side effects of this life consuming disease. We have all seen someone we love not being able to do even the most basic tasks of life because they are fighting a disease that never seems to want to leave.
Sonali Bendre Behl has been through this journey, fighting the fight of life, learning you should never take anything you have for granted. When the actress was diagnosed with metastatic cancer, the news shook not just the Bollywood world, but her fans around the country as well. In a country that reveres celebrities as much as they revere God, it comes as nothing short of a catastrophic disaster when they realise someone they have loved from afar is affected with a disease like cancer.
To let the people who are following her on social media know what she is going through on a daily basis, Sonali shared a recent post of her pains and struggles. Detailed and descriptive, this new post on her Instagram page is heartwrenching. Talking about chemotherapy and the struggles she is facing due to cancer, Sonali lets us peek into her world. Talking about how even lifting a finger gives her immense pain, Sonali states how physically and emotionally drained she has been during the last few months.

“I knew that if I allowed fear to overtake me, my journey was doomed. Fear, to a great extent, is born of a story we tell ourselves, and so I chose to tell myself a different story from the one women are told. I decided I was safe. I was strong. I was brave. Nothing could vanquish me.” – Cheryl Strayed, Wild. Over the past couple of months, I have had good days and bad ones. There have been days when I’ve been so exhausted and in so much pain that even lifting a finger hurt. I feel like sometimes it’s a cycle… one that starts off with physical pain and leads to mental and emotional pain. The bad days have been many… Post chemo, post-surgery and the like… where even just laughing hurts. Sometimes it felt like it took everything I’ve had to push past it… a minute to minute battle with myself. I got through it knowing that even though I was fighting a long drawn out, draining battle… it was one that was worth the fight. It’s important to remember that we’re allowed to have those bad days. Forcing yourself to be happy and cheerful all the time serves no purpose. Who are we being fake and putting on an act for? I allowed myself to cry, to feel the pain, to indulge in self-pity… for a short while. Only you know what you’re going through and it is fine to accept it. Emotions aren’t wrong. Feeling negative emotions isn’t wrong. But after a point, identify it, recognize it and refuse to let it control your life. It takes an immense amount of self-care to get out of that zone. Sleep always helps, or having my favourite smoothie after chemo, or just talking to my son. For now, as my treatment continues… my visual focus remains to just get better and get back home. Through this post, one learns some really valuable lessons. It is okay to break down. It is okay to ask for help and it is perfectly okay for one to be vulnerable. It is okay to lean on the people around you and to let them know you are going through a breakdown. Sonali’s post has taught us that struggling through your pain alone is not alright and you are completely justified for feeling all the emotions you are.
However, what is important to know here is, despite you feeling all that you are, you should never let the pain become your identity. The moment you give the pain this much power, it completely takes over your life and does not let you live the way you should. Life is a continuous, never ending test and you only do well if you play by the rules you make for yourself. While this particular record is not all that surprising, the name just has to be mentioned on the list. Asha Bhosle has created a record for having the maximum number of studio recordings. The gorgeous singer has recorded over 11,000 songs in more than 20 languages since the year 1947. How cool is that?
2. Abhishek Bachchan (Most number of public appearances)
When Abhishek Bachchan was touring to promote Delhi 6, he broke the record for making the most number of public appearances in 12 hours! The actor travelled around 1800 km in 12 hours, leading to him achieving this feat. During the promotions, he visited places like the EDM mall in Ghaziabad, Spice at Noida, Crown Plaza in Faridabad, Select Citywalk, Ambience Mall and Central Mall in Chandigarh and Shoppers’ Stop in Juhu in Mumbai.
3. The Kapoor family (Largest screen family)
Remember Prithviraj Kapoor, the patriarch of the Kapoor family? Since his entrance into the world of Bollywood, there have been not one, not two, but twenty four members of the Kapoor family who are in the world of acting! The Kapoor family has been in the Guinness Book of Records since the year 1999.
4. Jagdish Raj (Most typecast actor)
Jagdish Raj has been known for being the most typecast actor in the industry. So spectacular was his performance as a police inspector, he played the character in 144 films! Some of his most talked about performances were in movies like Silsila, Deewar, Don and Shakti.
5. Amitabh Bachchan (Only star to sing the Shri Hanuman Chalisa)
While Junior Bachchan was awarded his place in the Guinness Book of Records for the most number of public appearances, Senior Bachchan was awarded a place for being the only actor who sang the Hanuman Chalisa. Such a unique reason for being in the book of records, no?
6. Shah Rukh Khan (Most earning star in Bollywood)
Easily the most popular star in Bollywood, Shah Rukh Khan, also known as King Khan, entered the Guinness Book of Records for being the highest paid Bollywood celebrity. Not just that, he also was first on the list of the highest paid celebrities according to Forbes. The actor recorded a total earning of Rs. 220 crores in the year 2013.
7. Katrina Kaif (Highest paid actress in 2013)
Quite like Shah Rukh Khan, Katrina Kaif was the highest paid actor in the industry. So popular was she in the year 2013, she earned a place for herself in the Guinness Book of Records for having an annual income of Rs. 63.75 crores! At the time, no other actress had been able to come even close to her in terms of earning. How inspiring is that?
8. P. Jairaj (Longest career in Bollywood)
P. Jairaj earned a place in the Guinness Book of Records for having the longest career in Bollywood. When P. Jairaj made his debut during the silent film era in Bollywood in 1929, not many people took notice of this actor. However, with a career spanning a period of 70 years and with over 300 films to his name, this actor has certainly earned his place in the Guinness Book of Records!

Nithya Menen’s Praana First Look Poster Is Out
Nithya Menen, the woman of the hour, is gearing up for Praana, her next extremely exciting project, which is being made in multiple languages (Hindi, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam) at the same time! This means the gorgeous actress had to do the same scenes in not one, but four different languages.
Trying to capture the audience’s attention for the entire duration of the film is nothing short of a commendable task. However, with Nithya Menen’s track record of excellent performances to date, this is not an unimaginable feat for the brilliant and talented actress! Highly anticipated for several reasons, one of the major plus points for Praana being one of the most awaited movies in recent times is that the film is going to be completely focused on Nithya Menen’s character! While Dulquer Salman is going to play a small role in this movie, the exciting factor is clearly Nithya’s part and how beautifully she executes this challenging role!
Clearly every director’s favourite actress in the South Indian film industry, Nithya Menen is famously dubbed as the girl with no repeat takes! Another first of sorts in India, the makers have used sync surround sound to up the excitement quotient for the film. Praana is going to be directed by V. K. Prakash and filmed by critically acclaimed cinematographer, P. C. Sreeram. The sound for the movie will be given by Oscar award winning sound engineer, Resul Pookutty and the lyrics are going to be given by Louis Banks.
Jointly produced by Anita Raj and Praveen S. Kumar under the banners of Real Studio and S Raj Productions, this particular Nithya Menen project is exciting, to say the least! The release date of the film has not been given yet, so stay tuned for the arrival of one of the most exciting movies in the film world to date!
Bollywood Films That Talk About Mental Health
Despite India calling itself a progressive country, there is still a stigma attached to the term “mental illness.” Even though people are seeking out counselors and attempting to get help for the disorders they are facing, there is still a large part of the population still living in denial about how there are illnesses beyond what meets the eye. Bollywood, as an industry, is growing in this regard and has made more than just one brilliant film on mental illness. On World Mental Health Day, here is taking a look at movies that brought to the fore the different issues people face and don’t have the courage to talk about!
1. Karthik Calling Karthik
Directed by Vijay Lalwani, Karthik Calling Karthik talks about how people find it difficult to live a normal life when affected by schizophrenia. While this disorder is kept hidden for the better half of the film, the second half highlights the issue with stark and broad strokes of realism. Featuring the lead (Farhan Akhtar as Karthik,) the film shows him calling himself and giving him the hope of normalcy. However, while this is not really a part of the symptoms people with schizophrenia experience, it was still an important effect needed to be told. A bold film on the subject, it brought to the fore the need for accepting people even with all their flaws!
2. My Name is Khan
Directed by Karan Johar, My Name is Khan was an extremely accurate portrayal of what goes on in the life of a person affected by Asperger’s Syndrome (AS.) Critically and publicly acclaimed for the way Shah Rukh Khan’s character addresses and lives with this disorder, My Name is Khan shows how people with Asperger’s have drastic difficulties in the way they handle social situations, go about their day to day activities and the restricted and repetitive patterns of behaviour followed by them. Addressing the entire spectrum of difficulties faced by people with AS, My Name is Khan was a film needed to be made on the subject, making people sit up and take notice for more than just the three hours of its duration.
3. Bhool Bhulaiyaa
Bhool Bhulaiyaa, on the front of things, seems like a horror film, but in reality is a movie that deals with dissociative identity disorder. While the film did not really do that well at the box office, it depicted multiple personality disorder to the tee. It talked about how the lead character was facing dissociation from her original self and how she forgot who she really was. A mixture of humour and a serious issue, Bhool Bhulaiyaa needed to be made.
4. Taare Zameen Par
For the first time ever, a Bollywood film addressed the issue of dyslexia with ease, tact and subtlety. Though dyslexia is categorized under the bracket of learning disabilities, the disorder has a host of mental impacts leading to the overall growth impairment of the person affected. Taare Zameen Par received a lot of praise for the way it addressed the issue and the way Aamir Khan‘s character showed it is okay to be you, despite being afflicted with a disability!
5. Dear Zindagi
How many times have you grown up and felt like the life you have had is not the life you were meant to lead? How many times have you had troubles accepting your adult life because of your traumatic childhood? Living in denial is what Dear Zindagi explores. The movie looks at what happens when you disregard the importance of acceptance and if you don’t get the treatment you need to lead a healthy and happy life .
Issues affecting mental health are not a matter to be brushed off without a second glance. Talk about what you are going through, get the help you need and accept that even if things do not seem rosy on the outside, there is a way you can fix the scales of balance!
