Shah Rukh Khan And Gauri Khan: A Love Story That Needs Telling

Shah Rukh Khan and Gauri Khan: two of the most prolific names in the Bollywood industry, have a love story that makes everyone around them still want to believe in fairy tales. A story worth filming, their love was so strong, it broke several hearts. Without further ado, here is jumping into a story which needs to be told, heard and read!
The beginning
The first time Shah Rukh Khan and Gauri Chibber laid eyes on each other was at a common friend’s party in the year 1984. Only 18 years old, Shah Rukh Khan fell head over heels in love with the 14 year old Gauri. He was so shy at the point, he did not have the courage to ask her for a dance. When he finally went up to her, Gauri took one look at the nervous wreck standing in front of her and said no, as she was waiting for her “boyfriend.”
The news broke the young King Khan’s heart, making him forget about love and happily ever afters. It was only much later when the two were on a sporadic phone call that Gauri told Shah Rukh the truth. She was at the party with her brother and not her boyfriend! Shah Rukh’s heart opened all over again and that was the beginning of a beautiful friendship.
Love actually? No. Not quite.
Gauri very quickly fell for Shah Rukh’s wit, charm and easy manner. While the two seemed very happy on the surface, Gauri realised Shah Rukh may seem easy going on the outside, but was really controlling on the inside. SRK would want Gauri to not leave her hair open, would not want her to talk to other men without him being around and other overbearing things like that. SRK’s over possessive attitude got so bad that on the day after her birthday, Gauri disappeared to Bombay with her friends.
When Gauri disappeared, SRK realised he realised he was not only in love with her, he could not live without her. An out and out Bollywood hero, Shah Rukh Khan turned into a real life Devdas. With a mere Rs. 10,000 in his pocket and only the name of the city in mind, Shah Rukh Khan reached Mumbai, desperately in love and hopeful in life. A frantic Shah Rukh searched all over the city, with no real luck. After almost giving up hope, he saw Gauri sitting by herself at a beach. The moment the two saw each other, it was like they had eyes only for each other. That moment, with the sun in their eyes and wind in their hair, the two knew the only thing to do next was to get married.

Religion plays a huge part in every major aspect of life and it did in Gauri’s and Shah Rukh’s marriage as well. While they took the momentous and life changing choice to tie the knot, their parents needed a lot more convincing. One was a Hindu Brahmin and the other was a Muslim, a union between the two religions was just not possible. What would society say? While now it is much more accepted, mixed marriages were considered to be a definite no no at the point. After much to and fro, the parents finally gave in, coming to the understanding that nothing could stop these two from doing what they wanted.

Dev Anand And Suraiya – A Tragic Love Story

Evergreen actor Dev Anand was a part of many epic films like Guide (1965,) Jewel Thief (1967) and Johny Mera Naam (1970.) However, what many people are not aware of is his own life was nothing less than a Bollywood film. During the beginning of his career, the talented actor was romantically involved with the renowned actress and singer Suraiya. Their love story was filled with love, passion and tragedy.
Their first meeting
In the late 1940s, Dev Anand, an aspiring actor, first met Suraiya on the sets of Vidya, which was their first film together. Dev Anand instantly fell in love with the beautiful and down to earth Suraiya and later revealed she was his first love.
Although Suraiya was smitten with the young and handsome actor, it was an accident on the set of Vidya which cemented her love for Dev Anand. While shooting a scene in a boat, which suddenly capsized, Suraiya was saved by Dev Anand from drowning.
According to Suraiya, when she thanked Dev Anand for saving her life, the handsome actor replied, “If your life had ended, so would have mine.” Suraiya describes that as the exact moment when she fell deeply in love with Dev Anand.
Their separation
Although they managed to keep their association a secret for two long years, their relationship became public news during the shooting of Afsar in 1950. This revelation led to many problems in their relationship, mainly by Suraiya’s orthodox grandmother, Badshah Begum, as she did not want her granddaughter to marry a Hindu man.
With the dream of starting a new life together, the duo decided to elope during the shoot of their film Jeet. The news reached Badshah Begum, who dragged Suraiya from the shoot and kept a strict watch on the love birds after that, in an effort to end their relationship.
Many years later, while recalling the incident Suraiya confessed, “Eventually, my grandmother succeeded in separating us. Dev was deeply hurt and offended by my lack of courage. But I was afraid for him. In retrospect, I don’t think anything would have happened if I’d been bold enough. But I was terrified of my grandmother. And was heartbroken.”
Although the couple faced many problems from Suraiya’s orthodox grandmother, they found support from an unlikely source. Suraiya’s mother, Mumtaz Begum, was a strong supporter of their relationship. However, just like Suraiya, Mumtaz Begum also did not have any courage to go against her mother.
The last meeting
Suraiya’s mother was also the one who arranged the couple’s last meeting on the terrace of Suraiya’s apartment. The couple met secretly to end their four year long relationship, all the while crying and hugging each other. Dev Anand later confessed that after breaking up with Suraiya, he cried on his brother’s shoulder and later decided to forget the chapter and move forward in life.
With this, the amazing and passionate love story of Dev Anand and Suraiya ended on a sad note.
