Radhika Apte came to the world of Bollywood like a fiery breath of fresh air at a time when actresses were put in boxes, with no definite direction. As an actress, Apte redefined the world of cinema and proved acting is a skill worked on and mastered over time. Every role this particular lady has taken up more than prove this fact. Still do not believe us? Hopefully this list of some of her best movies to date might just do the trick!

1. Parched

To begin with, Parched as a film portrayed a side of the world not many are comfortable with. It dealt with four women leads navigating through the “parched” and dry desserts of Rajasthan. Apte stole the show with her flawless acting, addressing everything from homosexuality to gender politics like a seasoned actress.

2. Antaheen

There is a certain sense of longing in the way Apte delivers her dialogues. This aspect was perhaps first noticed in the film, Antaheen. Released in the year 2009, this film spoke about love, heartache, waiting and loneliness, the film brought to light the brilliance of Apte as an actress.

3. Phobia

Phobia, a 2016 released horror film, showed us how movies can be scary without having a supernatural element. Apte’s subtle acting brought to the fore the struggles of an agoraphobic woman. With Apte playing the lead role, one can truly feel the fear of being trapped in your own home.

4. Manjhi: The Mountain Man

That this film had not one but two brilliant actors is quite an interesting fact. Both Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Radhika Apte more than make up for all the flaws Manjhi as a film has. The story is inspiring and unique. Gritty and powerful, the film contains likeable characters who speak with quotable dialogues, delivered to perfection by the lead actors! A true testament on Apte’s skills as an actress!

5. Lust Stories

A Netflix original film, Lust Stories is an out and out Radhika Apte film. She is portrayed as the vulnerable teacher, desperate for love and belonging. Even though the other stars in this film are brilliant, Apte steals the show with her raw acting style.

Every role performed by Radhika Apte proves her skills as a brilliant actress. What is your favourite performance by her? Comment and let us know!

Bollywood Films Which Show Love Has No Gender

Published

Bollywood Films Which Show Love Has No Gender, Bollywood films which showcased love over boundaries, Mango Bollywood, Margarita With A Straw Movie, 5 Bollywood Movies On Relationships, My Brother Nikhil Hindi Movie, Bombay Talkies and Fire Bollywood Movies Stories, Hindi movies on Love Has No Gender

India recently passed a law which said Section 377 is no longer valid and that love no longer has any gender boundaries. Simply put, people who fall in love with those belonging to the same sex are no longer liable to prosecution and can do what their heart desires. While this in itself is a commendable move, it is only fit that we take a look at Bollywood films which showcased love over boundaries long before this act was abolished. Check out these films here!

1. Margarita With A Straw

Margarita With A Straw, directed by Shonali Bose and starring Kalki Koechlin, broke not one but two stereotypes. The film not only explored love between Kalki and her partner, it also showed how it was possible to love despite being diagnosed with cerebral palsy. Bose addressed this issue with subtlety, giving everyone goals like never before.

2. Aligarh

Aligarh, directed by Hansal Mehta and starring Rajkummar Rao and Manoj Bajpai, addresses the story of how a professor gets suspended from college because of his gender preferences. A representation of the struggles people in the country go through for doing the unexpected, Aligarh is a film that people need to watch to understand the life of the repressed.

3. My Brother Nikhil

My Brother Nikhil, directed by Onir, explores the sexuality of a man and about how he was affected with AIDS. This film explored both these situations at a time when both homosexuality and AIDS were a huge taboo! My Brother Nikhil brought to the fore the struggles of Nikhil and how only his sister helped him through the most difficult times of his life. A must watch for people to realise what happens when others are pushed into a corner.

4. Fire

Deepa Mehta’s Fire addressed two serious issues at the same time: homosexuality and family discord. Both Shabhana Azmi and Nandita Das are stuck in marriages that are not working and in the middle of this imbalance, love starts blossoming. Trouble starts brewing when they want to be together and society goes against this “unholy” union. A bold take on love beyond boundaries, FIre puts forth the troubles one does not expect.

5. Bombay Talkies

Bombay Talkies, a culmination of several stories by several directors, stands out primarily because of one particular story from the film: Ajeeb Dastaan Hai Yeh by Karan Johar. Showing the story of a married couple (Vidya Balan and Randeep Hooda,) this particular story talks about how despite being a part of the media world, people are still averse to the idea of homosexuality. Some even say this is a take on Karan Johar’s personal life and when you watch it, you realise this could actually be the story of an everyday family man!

With India embracing the issue of homosexuality, it is now time for our directors to tell these stories! If you think we missed out on any films like these, comment and let us know!

Varun Dhawan And His Best Performances So Far

Published

Varun Dhawan And His Best Performances So Far, Top Films Of Varun Dhawan's Career, Which is the best Varun Dhawan movie and why?, Mango Bollywood, Varun Dhawa Best Performances Till Date, Actor Varun Dhawan Movies, Top Iconic Performances by Varun Dhawan, A Lookback At Varun Dhawan's Best Performances

Varun Dhawan, undeniably the most sought after man of the hour, has been a part of the coveted 100 crores club not once, but four times! With not a single box office disaster to his name, the young actor has definitely come a long way from when he made his debut in Karan Johar’s Student of the Year! With 9 supremely successful films in his kitty, it only makes sense to take a look at some of Varun Dhawan’s best performances in the past!

1. Main Tera Hero

Varun Dhawan’s first ever film with his father, Main Tera Hero was arguably one of Dhawan’s best performances during the growth of his career. Named as the Govinda of the current generation, Main Tera Hero gave Dhawan the title of being a complete riot, with an unabashed touch of innocence,

2. Badlapur

Touted as one of Dhawan’s extremely intense film to date, Badlapur was the film that changed his career trajectory. A story about a man avenging the death of his wife and son, the film failed to make a major splash at the box office, earning less than 100 crores in its lifetime, despite the film being appreciated by the critics.

3. Dilwale

Despite having a strong cast (Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol and Kriti Sanon) in the lead roles, Varun Dhawan managed to make Dilwale his own! With his flawless acting, perfectly timed comic scenes and superfluous dialogue delivery. Dhawan definitely shone bright like a diamond in this Rohit Shetty directorial!

4. Badrinath Ki Dulhania

There is something really adorable about an Alia Bhatt and Varun Dhawan pairing, which was brought to the fore with Badrinath Ki Dulhania, the sequel to Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania. What makes this film so loved is that it was the second time Alia Bhatt and Varun Dhawan were seen together, giving us major Student of the Year feels!

5. October

Varun Dhawan broke free from his chocolate boy image with this Shoojit Sircar directorial. With October, Dhawan established himself as an actor to watch out for and proved beyond the shadow of a doubt that he is killing it and is here to stay!

From his first ever movie to his latest one, Varun Dhawan has grown exponentially. If you think we missed out on any of Varun Dhawan’s amazing past performances, comment and let us know!

Anurag Kashyap’s Journey In Bollywood: From The Beginning To Now

Published

on

Anurag Kashyap’s Journey In Bollywood: From The Beginning To Now, Journey of Anurag Kashyap, Anurag Kashyap's journey into filmmaking, Director Anurag Kashyap Movies, Mango Bollywood, Anurag Kashyap 20 Years Bollywood Journey, Unknown facts about Anurag Kashyap, How an outsider Anurag Kashyap broke into Bollywood

It was the 1990s, when directors were starting to figure out their films and the kind of script they did. While there was talk of conventional cinema stereotypes being broken, no director really made the effort to work out of the box and produce thought provoking and truly unique films. Even though the directors at that point had a very loyal target audience, certain factions of the society kept craving for more, for something strong and different.

Breaking the mould

There was a very solid feeling of nepotism in the Bollywood industry during the 90s. A young boy, freshly graduated and in his early 20s, realised the very apparent need for breaking this convention. He wanted to make films which were dramatic, different and told not fancy stories, but stories of the ordinary man as well as about the dark side of the moon.

For an outsider, getting into the very closed door world of Bollywood was not an easy thing. For Anurag Kashyap, it was all the more harder because he wanted to make films no one else dared to even think about. Kashyap’s first two Bollywood films, Paanch and Black Friday, failed to create the impact he expected them to make, leaving Kashyap with not a lot of money and a lot of wasted years (7, to be exact.)

Struggling forward

Even as a kid, Anurag Kashyap always loved horror as a genre. From stories about psychopaths, killers and gang members, everything that had a dark and twisted side was extremely appealing to this particular director. When Kashyap entered the industry, there was a very specific pattern followed by the directors. Trees, lovemaking, dramatic songs and almost cliched scenes were the order of the day for most of the films then. Kashyap realised then that something needed to change as soon as possible.

Armed with a genre he treasured more than his life, Kashyap tried creating a splash with his first two movies. However, his grand entrance was disturbed and he managed to cause nothing more than a tiny ripple in the water. Despite the failure of his films, his dedication to the script was so strong, he went above and beyond to get the work done.

The work was hard and real

For Paanch and Black Friday, Kashyap would shoot on the streets at night to reduce location costs.  For Gulaal, he really wanted particular shots that needed more money than he could afford at the point. Inspiration struck during Diwali when he saw the hoard of lights all over the streets of Jaipur. These films were about his early life (Paanch was a dedication to his life and struggles; Black Friday was about how he got sexually abused as a child, while Gulaal was about several turning points during his growth as a director.)

With That Girl In The Yellow Boots, he realised the amount of potential there was in the international market, while with films like Raman Raghav 2.0, Gangs of Wasseypur 1 and 2, he came to understand the the audience’s lack of appreciation towards the ordinary man’s struggle. From all the films Kashyap has made to date (the successes and the failures,) you cannot miss the very obvious presence of Kashyap in these films. Every movie is real, every story is dark, psychological affecting and haunting,

Every time I watch an Anurag Kashyap film, something stirs inside me. A little bit of happiness leaves every time I watch his films and I do not know if the feeling is that of happiness or sadness. This man has taught me life is hard and jagged, with stories at every corner and turn. If you have any Anurag Kashyap stories to share, comment and let us know!
