Every culture and every country celebrates its heroes differently. Some immortatise their heroes in the form of books while others do so through the reel world. It is through the world of cinema we found the best way to bring to life the struggles of some of the truly greats. Bollywood as an industry has done justice to the stars of days gone by with some commendable biopics. To make your Tuesdays slightly better, here is looking at some biopics that really brought out what we could not see.
1. Gandhi (1982)
Gandhi, based on the life of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, the man who gave his life to the country, is a film for the ages. The movie chronicled the life of this great man and talked about how he worked hard so that the India he loved stayed proud and free. Despite being a film made in the United Kingdom, as a biopic, this film definitely takes the cake and cherry!
2. Bandit Queen (1994)
This 1994 film was based on the life of Phoolan Devi, one of the most famously infamous bandits in the 1970s. She rose to fame by being the only woman who could fight as well as the other men in her group. After a long struggle against several rival groups, Phoolan Devi and her remaining team surrendered to the police in the year 1983. Not only did she rule the under belly of the Mumbai Mafia with an iron fist, she also earned herself a seat in the Parliament! With the exceptionally talented Seema Biswas as Phoolan Devi, Bandit Queen was an extremely powerful piece of work, chronicling the rise and fall of Phoolan Devi. Directed by Shekhar Kapur, Bandit Queen won the National Film Award for the Best Feature Film in Hindi.
3. The Dirty Picture (2011)
Based on the much talked about life of Silk Smitha, one of the most controversial actresses from the South, The Dirty Picture was a success even before it hit the silver screen. Even though Vidya Balan stole the show as Silk, the rest of the cast did an equally brilliant job. The main crux of this film centered around how despite building up eroticism, the Indian film industry refused to accept it in public!
4. Neerja (2016)
Based on the life of Neerja Bhanot, Neerja focused on how this air hostess saved the life of 327 out of 329 passengers. The movie revolves around the highjacking of the Pan Ann 73 Flight in Karachi. Not only is Sonam Kapoor‘s acting the best so far, the film brings to life Neerja’s daunting spirit and commendable sacrifice for the people she was serving.
5. Bhaag Milka Bhaag (2013)
Based on the life of Milka Singh, a National Medal Award winning runner, Bhaag Milka Bhaag was widely appreciated for the stark portrayal of the many challenges faced by Milka Singh in his race to the top. Directed by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, the film was also recognised for the traumatic effects of India after India Pakistan partition of 1947 and about how it shaped Milka’s childhood.
While these are just some of the truly great biopics in the history of Bollywood biopics, there were other films like PadMan, Mary Kom and Paan Singh Tomar which left a lasting mark. If you still have not watched any of the above, then you definitely are missing out on some great stories! If you think we missed out on any great biopics that need to be mentioned in the list, feel free to comment and let us know!
Gold Film Review And First Day Box Office Expectations
Director: Reema Kagati
Cast: Akshay Kumar, Mouni Roy, Amit Sadh, Kunal Kapoor, Vineet Singh
For some obscure reason, the day India became free seems to be one of the most sought after days by filmmakers. Singing to this tune, Reema Kagti’s just released Gold glitters with patriotism and love for one’s country. The first 20 minutes of this historical film show the tri colour flag being proudly displayed at the 1948 Olympics in India, with the hockey team being portrayed as the main focal point.
Right from the very beginning of the film, one can tell Akshay Kumar (playing the character of Tapan Das) is the unsaid hero of this particular hockey team. Seemingly based on the Indian hockey team’s stupendous win at the Olympics, Gold as a film is disappointing.
One of the major things going against this Akshay Kumar starrer is perhaps the amount of focus placed on the main lead. Even with the tri colour fluttering with pride in the background, the characters are sketchy and weak. As a manager, Tapan Das is always high on whiskey and self regret. Even Tapan’s banters with his wife (Monobina) seem tired, scripted and pretentious. Perhaps one of the highlights of this film is a song which chronicles all the major life changing events of India as a country.
While not a lot about Gold, there seems to be a singly ray of light in the form of a positive relationship shown between India and Pakistan. It is the manipulation and the predictability in the film which seems to fall flat on more than one occasion through the movie. Overall, Gold as a story is a well plotted drama that sometimes devolves into schmaltz and melodrama. However, it gives us solid two and half hours of tri colour hued entertainment, with more patriotism stuffed down your throat than one could stomach comfortably. Watch if you really want to, but not for the sake of entertainment.

Reasons To Watch Gold Tomorrow
Gold, the highly anticipated film starring Akshay Kumar and written by Mouni Roy, is all scheduled to hit the screens tomorrow. Before it does, here is taking a look at why you just have to watch this Akshay Kumar starrer!
1. The Independence Day angle
As a film, Gold touches a strong patriotic angle. This movie talks about India’s first Gold medal win at the Olympics, post the British Raj. What better way to celebrate the 71st Independence Day than by watching a film with such strong roots in our Country’s fight for freedom?
2. Akshay Kumar
To say Akshay Kumar has grown as an actor is an understatement. With films like Toilet Ek Prem Katha and PadMan to his name, the actor worked in some great films in the recent past. With Gold as well, there are a lot of expectations riding on this particular actor. It is going to be quite interesting to watch this man play a role he has not done before!
3. A true story
Gold has two things going for it: the fact it is releasing on Independence Day and that it is inspired from true events. Gold is based on the events leading up to India’s first Olympic gold medal as a free country. The true events of the time must be different but the makers have tried to present the essence of the era with this film.
4. The cast
In the recent past, ensemble casts have been working really well for the Bollywood industry. With Gold also, Mouni Roy has gone the extra mile. The film stars Vineet Kumar Singh who won over critics earlier this year with his stellar performance in Mukkabaaz. Amit Sadh and Kunal Kapoor, who were both last seen in Raag Desh, play pivotal roles in this particular film.
As a film, Gold seems extremely promising. Watch the movie tomorrow and tell us what you think!
