Cast: Anil Kapoor, Aishwarya Rai, Rajkummar Rao, Divya Dutta, Pihu Sand, Girish Kulkarni
Director: Atul Manjrekar
Stars: 2 on 5
In every movie, there is always a message. Even if it is not clear, the underlying message is still very clear and apparent. So is the case with Atul Manjerekar’s Fanney Khan. The story is seemingly simple: a 1990s orchestra singer on the other side of 50 (Anil Kapoor,) tries reliving his glory days by propelling his daughter (Divya Dutta) into the limelight. Seems simple right? Not really. There are many, many twists to make this story seem heartwarming and soul touching.
While the girl has a really nice voice, her body size causes a hindrance. The film seems to have been set at a time when female singers were supposed to have a size zero body. Fanney Khan as a movie addresses some of the major flaws in society. It talks about how body image has become such a huge part of celebrity culture, how fat shaming can be the worst thing for a young person just starting out exploring self hood, and how much pressure there is around the whole circus of being famous.
Unfortunately, even though the real issues are touched upon, the story fails because the first time director does not dig deeper into the above mentioned issues. Divya Dutta‘s character, Latta, is inspired by Aishwarya Rai‘s character (Baby Singh.) What makes the film fall so flat is the film’s failure at addressing the emotional side of the very serious concerns addressed. Fanney Khan could have become a raging success if the cast as well as the director made complete use of the story.
As an adaption of the National Award winning Belgian film, Everybody’s Famous, Fanney Khan could have really made it to the big leagues. All in all, as a first time director, Atul Manjrekar does a decent job at recreating two sides of the same coin.
Kangana Ranaut’s Take On Indira Jaising Seeking Pardon For Nirbhaya Rapists
Kangana Ranaut is an excellent actress as well as a very vocal critic on issues concerning nationalism and politics. The actress is all set to star in the movie Panga, which is scheduled to be released on January 24th. During a promotional event for the movie, Kangana Ranaut once again gave a piece of her mind and this time, about senior advocate Indira Jaising.
Indira Jaising was recently in the news when she urged Asha Devi, the mother of Nirbhaya, to pardon the rapists who were convicted in the Nirbhaya rape and murder case. The convicts were handed out capital punishment and are scheduled to be hanged at Tihar Jail on February 1st. Indira Jaising, who is a noted human rights activist, took to Twitter to share her thoughts about the issue by citing the example of Nalini, who was a convicted assasin in Rajiv Gandhi’s murder and was forgiven by Sonia Gandhi, the wife of the then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. Indira Jaising’s tweet did not sit well with the public, given the nature and brutality of the horrific rape which shocked the collective consciousness of the entire Nation.
While I fully identify with the pain of Asha Devi I urge her to follow the example of Sonia Gandhi who forgave Nalini and said she didn’t not want the death penalty for her . We are with you but against death penalty. https://t.co/VkWNIbiaJp

Kangana Ranaut lashed out at Indira Jaising and said she (Indira Jaising) should be locked up with the rapists for four days in jail because she is sympathetic towards them. Kangana also went on to say women like Indira Jaising give birth to monsters like them (the rapists.)
#WATCH Kangana Ranaut on senior lawyer Indira Jaising’s statement,’Nirbhaya’s mother should forgive the convicts’: That lady (Jaising) should be kept in jail with those convicts for four days…Women like them give birth to these kind of monsters and murderers. (22.1) pic.twitter.com/MtNcAca1QG

These comments, however, did not sit well with co star Richa Chadha, to whom Indira Jaising is a role model. Richa Chadha last appeared as a lawyer in the movie Section 375, which was about an alleged rape of a costume designer by a movie’s director.
Indira Jaising is yet to respond to Kangana Ranaut’s latest comments about the Nirbhaya issue and her tweet.
