Cast: Kareena Kapoor Khan, Sonam Kapoor, Shikha Talsania, Swara Bhaskar
Rating: 3.5/5
Director: Shashanka Ghosh

Remember Lipstick Under My Burkha, a film which displayed female angst and left you with an uncomfortable sense feeling towards the end? Shashanka Ghosh’s Veere Di Wedding addresses the same issues, albiet the angst and filled with sass!

Four girls, on a journey of self discovery, go through all the ups and downs of every day life and expectations. Throw in a very surprising gay couple into the mix and Veere Di Wedding turns into a modern day film about wanting acceptance. Shashanka weaves a very typical story with a lot of sass and jazz. Fabulously dressed women, quips and tricks thrown around, Veere Di Wedding is the modern day retelling of Lipstick Under My Burkha!

Despite its scrambling, unfocused plot and some not-so-great acting, Veere Di Wedding is propped up by its moments. The casual, understated Andaz Apna Apna reference; or the stereotypical Delhi wedding that nonetheless calls it like it is; or even the drunken banter between friends in their late 20s when one of them is about to get married. Apart from the good intentions mentioned earlier, it’s moments you’ll encounter in these situations that make the film breezy.

Touted to be not a “chick flick,” what makes this film work is the fact that it shows women bonding over things that are not clothes, make up and let us not forget, marriage (we live in a patriarchal society were women are expected to fret about these things.) Though shoddily written, Veere Di Wedding drives home a very strong point. Women are slowly coming into their own and after a point, societal expectations are just not worth the effort! Watch Veere Di Wedding for the story telling, the songs and the brilliant acting by the four women in the lead roles !
