One hundred years of beauty. One hundred years of grace. One hundred years of artistry, emotions and beauty, the Bollywood industry is like no other. Especially in terms of the women that made this industry what it is today. With more than a little bit of nostalgia riding on this particular piece, here are ten beautiful women through the years!
1. Meena Kumari
From a bubbly child to a teenage diva, Meena Kumari embraced melancholy like it was her middle name. This is perhaps why her performances in movies like Sahib Biwi Aur Gulaam and Pakeezah are remembered even today. Barely months away from turning 40, Meena Kumari passed away. Her legacy, however, breathes strong and beautiful even after a long period of time.
Often referred to as the first female superstar of Bollywood, Vyjayanthimala left a great legacy behind. In what was a very surprising move at that time, she refused Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award in Devdas, claiming that her role was parallel to that of Suchitra Sen’s Parvati. Throughout her career, she redefined herself with changing times and even wore a swimsuit in Rak Kapoor’s Sangam.
3. Jaya Bachchan
Jaya Bachchan has always stood apart from the norm with her disarming persona and alluring innocence. All the roles portrayed by Jaya Bachchan perfectly describe her as a person, making her style one of the most coveted styles to date.
Unconventionally strong and purposefully unique, Rekha stood out from the very beginning. A breathtaking mix of beauty and glamour, Rekha was a beauty who became only pronounced over time.
While she left a huge hole in a lot of hearts with her young passing, Madhubala’s captivating smile and spell binding beauty was myth worthy. Beauty described as an adjective is often not one attributed to a human. However, it can be perfectly used to describe Madhubala!
Breaking the shackles of cliched beauty norms set during her time, Kajol set a new ground with not only her style but also with her unibrow! Representing everything Bollywood looked down on at the time, Kajol created a breathtaking niche for herself by being her. A true beauty in every possible way.
7. Waheeda Rehman
Waheeda Rehman was perhaps one of the few actresses who set the ball rolling for stellar performances. The elegance with which she performed in her movies is only a testament to this fact.
8. Smita Patil
She was one of those stunning beauties who gave even Shabhana Azmi a run for her money. Her song, Aaj Rapat Jaye from Namak Halal is still loved by everyone. Unfortunately, her untimely death left everyone with a miserablly sour taste in their mouth.
Easily one of the finest actresses of her time, Nutan was known for her controversial roles. She was always brave enough to pick the movies no one would, thereby ensuring her continued fame and success!
Nargis started off her career as a child actress and through the years, she went on to become a force to be reckoned with. The highlight of her career was the Oscar nomination of the movie, Mr. India. Even though she stopped acting during the peak of her career, she had given enough performances by then to become one of the most noteworthy actresses of her time.
Photograph – Reasons To Watch
Photograph, a Ritesh Batra directorial starring Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Sanya Malhotra, is all set to hit the screens tomorrow. Before it does, here is taking a look at why you should absolutely watch this beautiful love story!
1. The story
What happens when people from different backgrounds are drawn together in weird circumstances? When you watch the trailer of Photograph, you are given a brief insight into what to expect from the film. Rafi (played by Nawazuddin Siddiqui,) is a photographer who takes pictures outside the Gateway of India, where he meets Miloni (played by Sanya Malhotra.) A picture draws the two of them into a conversation and from there on, you are drawn into the beautiful dynamic shared by the two. Clearly, there is more to the movie than what is shown in the trailer. If not for another reason, finding out what the entire story is should be reason enough to watch the movie tomorrow!
2. The cast
To say that Nawazuddin Siddiqui is a brilliant actor would be an understatement. Despite being a new entrant, he quickly rose to prove he was not to be taken lightly. Every movie or show of which he has been a part, from Gangs of Wasseypur, to Sacred Games and to Manto, he gives the audience a certain kind of thrill. When you watch someone as truly talented as him perform, you know you are in for a treat. Sanya Malhotra, in her own light, is quite a gem. Despite being a newbie to the world of acting and Bollywood, she is still making her own mark. With a host of really successful movies to her name, Dangal and Badhaai Ho, Sanya Malhotra has definitely proved she is an actress for whom one should keep an eye out! Talk about a double bonanza!
3. Ritesh Batra
Known for making amazing movies like The Lunchbox, starring Nimrat Kaur and Irrfan Khan, Ritesh Batra has quickly made it to the list of the most critically acclaimed directors in India. With an eye for detail and a talent for bringing out the best in everyone, Ritesh Batra has made sure he works his charm even with Photograph. In The Lunchbox, Batra showed every minute aspect of the film without overdoing the drama and being extremely subtle about the situation. This is why, even with Photograph, one can expect a truly well done film.
With every aspect being thought of and laid out in a very endearing manner, Photograph promises to be an extremely intense watch. Let us know what your views about the film are in the comments below!
Tiger Shroff’s Birthday – Unknown Facts About The Actor
Tiger Shroff, Jackie Shroff’s and Ayesha Shroff’s son, has been making his presence felt with more than one brilliant performance. On the occasion of his birthday, here is taking a look at some unknown facts about the younger Shroff!
Unknown facts about Tiger Shroff:
1. His real name
Did you know, Tiger Shroff’s real name isn’t Tiger Shroff? While he may stand out as the only actor in Bollywood with a quirky name, the reality is, his name is quite different! Did you know his real name is (drumroll please,) Jai Hemant Shroff? Talk about a shocker!
2. Aamir Khan was Tiger Shroff’s first guiding hand in Bollywood
While a lot of people credit Tiger Shroff’s parents as his ticket to success, the Bollywood rumour mill says it was Aamir Khan! Apparently, Junior Shroff helped teach Aamir Khan some cool tricks at the gym and through the workouts, the two instantly hit it off! In fact, Aamir Khan also promised to introduce Shroff into the world of Bollywood. However, while that part didn’t work out as planned, Aamir Khan still launched the trailer of Heropanti, Junior Shroff’s debut movie!
3. Acting wasn’t Shroff’s first choice
While one would think acting was the first choice of a star kid, think again! Did you know, Tiger Shroff’s first career choice was to be a martial artist? From a really young age, Shroff worked really hard on honing his martial art skills. For Heropanti, Tiger Shroff underwent flexibility and motion training, including back layout, front pike, 360 degree backward twist, wall flips and leaps, from Zilai Mawai, a national level coach. This training lasted for approximately three years! Talk about dedication to art.
4. He rejected making a debut in television
Before the world of Bollywood started calling Tiger Shroff, the television world was after Junior Shroff. He was given the chance of playing the lead in a television show, Fauji, in 2009. However, Tiger Shroff knew that since his ultimate goal was movies, getting into television wasn’t the right choice for him at the point!
5. He is the only newcomer introduced by Sajid Nadiadwala
Bollywood is famous for established stars and directors introducing new stars. While people like Salman Khan and Karan Johar gave the industry a lot of promising new faces, producer Sajid Nadiadwala only introduced one, Tiger Shroff! He was extremely nervous during the release of Heropanti and felt he was truly responsible for the success of the Tiger Shroff!
Tiger Shroff has had more than one successful film under his belt. Here is wishing the talented actor an extremely happy birthday and here is looking forward to more films from the talented star!
Bollywood Movies Which Became Hits Without Songs
Bollywood as an industry has become so synonymous with songs and dance, it has become extremely hard to imagine movies without them. When you watch movies without songs, you are invariably forced to pay more attention to the story of the film. Here is taking a look at movies which were superhits even though they didn’t have any song to back them!
1. Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro
Directed by Kundan Shah, this 1983 film was a satire about the rampant corruption in the Indian political system. Starring Naseeruddin Shah, Ravi Baswani, Om Puri, Pankaj Kapur, Satish Shah and Satish Kaushik, this film was a telltale of sorts, based on all the things wrong with the Indian Government. For a film like this, it was almost necessary not to have any songs interrupting the brilliant storytelling technique. The lack of songs made sure the movie flowed seamlessly from scene to scene, without interruptions and distractions.
2. Ek Ruka Hua Faisla
A remake of 12 Angry Men, this Basu Chatterji film was gripping, entertaining and extremely well made. With a detailed characterization of the jury, this movie worked the way it did because it had no songs punctuating the intense story. With a cast made of some of the best television and cinema actors, Ek Ruka Hua Faisla was in more ways much better than the original film! A treat to watch, the rendition of the script was also really well done. A story like this would have fallen flat had there been songs as the back and forth arguments would have not had the impact they had in the actual movie.
Based in the year 1938, this Deepa Mehta directorial showed the life of widows in a British occupied India. At the time, widows were seen as a disgrace to the society and were confined to old age homes, post the death of their husbands, no matter what their age. Remarriage was considered a strong no no at the time and this Deepa Mehta directorial showed how one woman (Kalyani) did the unexpected by falling in love again. The point of this story was driven home because the story was told without having any songs or dance sequences.
While certain thrillers work really well with music backing the story line, this movie, written by Anurag Kashyap, proved just the opposite. Directed by Ram Gopal Varma, this movie had more than enough twists to keep you hooked to an extremely surprising end. What makes the movie stand out so much is, the lack of songs throughout the film made one want to pay attention to the entire story! By eliminating the songs from this movie entirely, Ram Gopal Varma quite literally showed one how a classic whodunnit would really look like if done well!
Starring Amitabh Bachchan and directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Black tells the story of a visually and hearing impaired girl. Depicting the relationship of the girl with her professor, the story of this film draws inspiration from the life of Helen Keller. What makes this movie stand out so much that it is exactly what one would not expect from a Bhansali directorial. No flashy sets, no loud music and no hyped up dance steps. Who could imagine Bhansali creating a movie like this! No one, right? Furthermore, the intensity of this movie required for songs to be absent throughout, giving the words the weightage they needed for one to feel the pain.
6. A Wednesday!
When Neeraj Pandey made his splashing debut with a hard hitting political film like A Wednesday!, not many people thought it would become a success. No songs, dance sequences and no epic love stories. How could films like this become a success? However, all doubts were dispelled the moment this film released. Making a massive splash at the box office, Neeraj Pandey’s debut earned a whopping Rs. 9 crores, despite not having any songs! As a director, Neeraj Pandey made sure his presence was felt by going the unconventional route. Making a debut with a strong and hard hitting film like this, Pandey really proved that when it comes to making a mark with your first film, you need a strong story above everything else.
When films are made without songs acting like fillers or carry forwards, it becomes imperative to want to pay attention to the storyline. This is precisely why such films need to be made! If you think we missed out on any other movies which became hits without songs, comment and let us know!
Bollywood Movies Which Failed When They First Released
Some Bollywood movies become hits and some fail. However, there are some with brilliant scripts and characters which fail, despite having everything going the right way for them. There are movies which gained recognition long after they hit the screens. Here’s taking a look at the movies which should have been super hits, but failed to make the kind of impact they should have!
1. Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro
The failure of this film is a shocker even today. Despite having an impressive star cast (Boman Irani, Naseeruddin Shah, Puri, Ravi Baswani and Pankaj Kapur,) the film just failed to take off when it first released. A story about two photographers and their journey to success, Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro just did not get the credit it deserved. Why? Because people in the ’80s just didn’t get satire as a concept, especially when it came in the form of a film! However, after a couple of years, the movie started being noticed by the right audience and people finally started accepting the greatness it was! So much that it eventually became a cult phenomenon!
2. Andaz Apna Apna
Andaz Apna Apna, despite being such a loved and sought after movie today, just failed to make an impression when it released. Although Aamir Khan, Salman Khan, Raveena Tandon and Karishma Kapoor gave brilliant performances, the movie just refused to stick. While the targeted audience refused to get the message of the film (friendship always comes over love) at that point, people today absolutely love it. Well, it probably takes a long time to appreciate the intensity of the film and the brilliance of the story.
3. Rocket Singh
Perhaps the first time Ranbir Kapoor played a Sikh, the failure of Rocket Singh was a massive surprise. With a storyline which was impressive to the very end, this movie showed the struggles and the underbelly of the marketing world to perfection. However, what people didn’t get perhaps was the understated way the movie told the story. While all the actors put out their finest performances, the movie just didn’t do the wonders it was expected to at the box office. However, a few years later, the film finally picked up a fan following, going so far as to winning Ranbir Kapoor an award at the Filmfare!
4. Pyar Ka Punchnama
Okay, the fact this particular film failed wasn’t an entire surprise. Albeit being filled with certain funny moments and interesting monologues, the movie just failed to stick with the larger audience. Made with six debutants, this film had a lot of hidden innuendos and snide comments against a particular gender. A reason, which perhaps acted as the film’s drawback. However, despite all the negative remarks, this film still managed to get quite a good following years after its release. In fact, people liked it so much, they went ahead and made a second part! Oh, well! Humour is subjective.
When news about Swades first started doing the rounds, people thought there was no doubt the movie was going to be a success. However, when it eventually released, it barely made a splash. Complete with a star like Shah Rukh Khan playing the lead and a story which was heartwarming to the very end, the reaction Swades received was lukewarm, at best. Telling the story of one man’s dreams of providing electricity to his village, the climax just failed to keep the audience hooked. Thankfully though, good sense prevailed and people finally accepted Swades for all the great things it has to offer, purely because of the content.
Another Ranbir Kapoor movie which just didn’t make the cut when it released, Rockstar flopping was quite a surprise. While both Nargis Fakhri and Ranbir Kapoor brought their A games to the table, the movie was just not liked by the audience. One of the reasons which could be attributed to the dislike is the fact, the ending was in no way conducive to the rest of the story. While it may not have done well or appreciated at the time of its release, Rockstar started gaining a cult following and today, it is quite a favourite movie!
There are movies which become instant successes when they release and then there are movies which take time to gain following. This is our list of movies which gained recognition after they hit the screens. What movies do you think should have become successes, but failed instead? Comment and let us know!
