Annually, Bollywood as an industry releases at least 300 movies. The fact that Bollywood is popular world over is no strange thing. While a lot of things have been known about the different members of this industry, there are still some things a lot of us do not know. Today, we take a look at the top ten lesser known facts about the Bollywood fraternity.

1. Shah Rukh Khan

King Khan has not been declared as one of the best actors in the industry for no reason. Not only has he acted in over 300 movies, he has also won the award for being the Best Actor 29 times till date!

2. Deepika Padukone

Deepika Padukone made her big Bollywood debut opposite Shah Rukh Khan in Om Shanti Om in the year 2007 and since then, there has been no looking back for this long legged beauty. Interestingly, she is the ONLY Bollywood actress who made it to the Rs. 500 crores club!

3. Kalki Koelchin

Kalki Koelchin is perhaps one of the most underrated actresses in Bollywood. While everyone knows about Kalki’s French roots, very few know the fact that Kalki’s grandfather, Maurice Koelchin, was the Chief Engineer during the construction of the Eiffel Tower and the Statue of Liberty! Cool right?

4. Mera Naam Joker

Mera Naam Joker released in 1970 and was perhaps the longest movie in Bollywood. It was so long, the movie had not one but TWO intervals! No movie has been able to beat this movie in terms of length!

5. Heroine

Madhur Bhandarkar has been known for making iconic movies like Fashion and Heroine. While Heroine was considered to be way ahead of its time by fans and critics alike, did you know that Kareena Kapoor Khan wore more than 130 dresses at different points during the movie? All the clothes she wore were designed by extremely famous designers. This was definitely a first!

6. Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge

While a lot of us love Shah Rukh Khan’s and Kajol’s pairing in Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge, did you know the first choice for Raj’s character was not Shah Rukh Khan? Hollywood actor, Tom Cruise, was supposed play this role. Back then, however, Hollywood and Bollywood did not really get along and this idea was aborted.

7. Sridevi

Sridevi has always been an icon for us. Did you know, in one of her initial movies, she played unconventional roles? One such movie was Moondru Mudichu where she played the role of Rajnikanth’s step mother despite the fact that she was only 13 years old at the time. Wow!

8. Mughal E Azam

When Mughal E Azam was being shot, it was initially shot in not one, but three different languages! While the Tamil version of this film tanked, the Hindi version did exceptionally well. Unfortunately, the English version was aborted right in the beginning.

9. Lagaan

Did you know Aamir Khan’s Lagaan was the first Bollywood movie to release in China? Not only was it the first movie of its kind, it was also the first movie to have an international release!

10. Mother India

The Oscars have been a coveted award ceremony not just for the Hollywood industry but also for the Bollywood world. Interestingly, Mother India was the first Bollywood movie to be nominated in the Foreign Films Category!

15 Years Of Lakhsya – Bollywood Movies About War

Remember how Hrithik Roshan grew up and joined the Indian Army to inspire the rest of us in Lakshya?  As today marks 15 years since the release of this film, here is taking a look at some war movies which were not just about the lives of Indian soldiers but also about war and what the soldiers went through:

1. Lakshya

Directed by Farhan Akhtar, Lakshya told the story of Lieutenant Karan Shergill, who leads his squad to victory by capturing a territory taken over by Pakistan.  While war does play a crucial role in this movie, the other issue with which this film deals is how people grow when faced with responsibility.  From facing real life issues head on, to understanding the discipline and time which goes into becoming an adult, Lakshya is a true tribute to war and soldiers.

2. Ab Tumhare Hawale Watan Sathiyo

Directed by Anil Sharma, Ab Tumhare Hawale Watan Sathiyo tells the story of how terrorists attacked the holy temple of Kedarnath.  Apart from the story about this attack, the film also talks about how a man joins the Indian Army for a few years before moving to the United States. However, after he joins, he realises the amount of effort which goes into being a soldier and from then on, everything about his life changes.  Everything about this movie is heartwarming and shows how much people can do when pushed into a corner.

3. LOC Kargil

Based on the Kargil War fought between India and Pakistan, LOC Kargil was directed by J.P. Dutta.  A step by step account of everything which happened during the Kargil War, the film brings to the fore the hardships of war and what soldiers go through on a daily basis.  A multi layered story, LOC Kargil talks about the soldiers who made the entire operation a success.  Everything about this movie made you not only respect the amount of effort soldiers put into the war but also how much personal sacrifices they make for their country.

4. Airlift

Unlike the other films, Airlift tells the story of how a businessman helps evacuate Indians in Kuwait who are stuck there during the invasion of Kuwait by Saddam Hussein.  While this is one of the primary issues about which this movie talks, Airlift also looks at how the lead puts his personal life aside to help his fellow countrymen when in need.  A true patriotic movie, Airlift makes you fall in love with how far people can go to help their countrymen when required.

5. Border

Director J.P. Dutta’s shot to fame, Border was based on the Indo Pakistan War of 1971.  Touted to be one of the best war films to have been released, this movie showed what our soldiers went through to make our country a safe place.  From night patrols to killing men at gunpoint, Border makes you realise how deep the spirit of patriotism runs in a soldier’s blood.

If you think we missed out on any other great movies about war and soldiers giving their lives to protect their motherland, comment and let us know!
