Earlier this year the Indian Government implemented the Goods and Services Tax (GST,) throughout the nation. Ever since the announcement, people have been for and against the bill. The Film and Television Industry has been very vocal about the negative impact of the GST. In fact, members of the industry have approached the Information and Broadcast Minister, Smriti Irani, about this matter.
Initially, Smriti Irani did not pay heed to the multiple complaints she received from the film industry. Now, after a thorough scrutiny, the Minister has came forward and spoke to Arun Jaitley, the Finance Minister of India, about the GST rates that have been implemented for the production and the distribution of entertainment content. In her letter, Smriti Irani has also said she wants a reduction of the GST rates for ticket prices.
Smriti Irani further urged the Finance Minister to take a look at look into all the issues that are affecting the film industry in terms of the GST rates. Arun Jaitley has not responded to the letter yet. Reports are, the Minister would respond after he looks into the matter in detail.
