Anupam Kher The New FTII Chairman

Anupam Kher replaced Gajendra Chauhan as the new chairman of the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) in Pune.

Kher has acted in over 500 movies to date. He has also been a part of plays that have been acknowledged critically. Anupam Kher has been in movies like Bend It Like Bekham and Silver Linings Playbooks, both of which have gotten international recognition.

Apart from acting in plays and movies, Anupam Kher has also dabbled with direction. Saaransh, made with Mahesh Bhatt, was Anupem Kher’s first movie as a director.

Gajendra Chauhan’s appointment as FTII chairman two years ago had caused a huge ruckus. The faculty and students had gone on a strike that went on for 139 days.  The reason for the strike was Gajendra’s political affiliations. The students and faculty claimed Gajendra’s ideologies went against those of the institution.

While Anupam Kher has been respected time and again for his acting and direction, it is indeed going to be interesting to see how he handles this prestigious position. The post has been previously held by industry greats like Mahesh Bhatt and Sanjay Leela Bhansali.
