WHITHER STAR PRICES?

WHITHER STAR PRICES?

Time was when Sridevi was considered numero Uno when she was charging what was then a whopping fee like seven lakhs thirty years ago in the wake of her having churned out super hits like Himmatwala, Mawali, and Tohfa. Around that time Amitabh Bachchan who was reigning as the No 1 star was being paid around twenty-five lakhs per film. Since then times have changed.

Today, while Aamir Khan’s going price, is 35 crores (though he had charged producer Bobby Bedi 7 for acting in his The Rising) you have Amitabh Bachchan charging a fixed price of Rs 3 crores, whether it is a running role like in Dev or Deewar or a fleeting appearance like in Lakshya. Shah Rukh is reported to be charging a cool twenty-five crores while Salman Khan demands and gets paid Rs 40 crores per film. Sunny Deol’s price tag is Rs 3.5 crores while Sanjay Dutt commands Rs 2 crores.

The price of the heroine has also increased manifold from the time when Sridevi was charging seven lakhs and Juhi Chawla was charging five lakhs, which look like pittance if you think of the star prices now. Today Deepika Padukone demands Rs 7 crores while the going price of Priyanka Chopra is Rs 7 to 10 crores, which has put many a producer off her. Preity Zinta demands Rs 2 crores while Rani Mukherjee has a reasonable price tag of Re 1.5 crores per film. Of course, if the producer in question happens to be an Aditya Chopra, there is no hard and fast rule as far as price is concerned and a Rani Mukherjee may even agree to do a guest appearance for free. Like in his heydays Jackie Shroff never even used to ask Subhash Ghai, his mentor, who had given him his big break with his Hero, what he would pay him for working in any film of his, whether it was Khalnayak, Ram Lakhan or for that matter Yaadein.

It may be remembered that Kareena opted out of Kal Ho Na Ho when Karan Johar refused to pay her even 50% of what her market price was. Preity Zinta who was approached after Kareena did not agree to do the film, grabbed the offer by asking Karan to pay her whatever he deemed fit for her. Her gambit paid off and Preity’s stars turned overnight. Preity became a regular fixture not only with the Johars but also the Chopras.

How do producers view at this syndrome of paying the stars through their noses? Prakash Mehra had gone on record to me before his death that unless and until the stars reduce their prices, the producers will not be able to make films, the way they want. “I had paid Amit just Rs 27 lakhs for Sharabi. Today I cannot afford to pay him Rs 3 crores. When I wanted to make a film with Akshay Kumar he asked for a crore. I told him I’d make my film with him only if he was ready to do it for Rs 75 lakhs. He excused himself and said he would consider my offer and let me know later. After six months, he came back to me and said he was ready to do my film for Rs 75 lakhs. By that time he had a few more flops and my distributors were not ready to pay me what I wanted because Akshay’s market had come down. I told him I was ready to pay him only Rs 50 lakhs but he didn’t agree.”

Nitin Keni who was the Executive producer of Gadar directed by Anil Sharma, however, feels that everyone can make a hefty amount if one plans the making of a film properly and professionally. “Today there are several ways by which you can not only recover your investment in a film but also make profits. A producer can make money by selling the Indian theatrical rights but also overseas rights as well as video and satellite rights. Then there are the music rights besides Internet rights. You also can sell the 16 mm rights. Even when you are making a film, you can make money by going in for In Film Advertising like Subhash Ghai made with both Taal and Yaadein. Or for that matter, Rakesh Roshan had made with Koi Mil Gaya, and the recent Kaabil. The biggest advantage today is that you can recover your money faster by releasing your film in multiplexes which yield a lot because of massive admission rates.”

Salman Khan does make exceptions to the rule. For instance, he acted in Revathy’s film Phir Milenge practically for free. Says Salman,“If I know the filmmaker is sincere and wants to project an issue like Revathy made her film to increase awareness of Aids and the film is close to his or her heart, I am ready to compromise on my price.”

Down South, Rajnikant makes – hold your breath, around 40 crores per film. His strategy is simple. He does not sign any producer’s film. Instead, he announces a project with him in the name of a dummy producer. The day the announcement comes; exhibitors and distributors make a beeline to the dummy producer’s office and offer him money. With the money collected, the film is launched by Rajnikant who pays the dummy producer a fixed amount for his services and pockets the rest of the money which amounts to a cool 40 crores.

Mithun Chakraborty is perhaps the best example one can give when it comes to making acting an extension of his business in hotelier. used to charge Rs 45 lakhs as what was called the BATA rate for all his producers who were ready to come down to Ooty and shoot their films. Mithun even used to volunteer to finance the producers if they ran out of money while shooting in a single stop-shooting schedule. Because he was making money by making the shooting units stay at his own Hotel Monarch. Besides Mithun could get the time in between his shoots to supervise the day to day running of his hotel since the shoot was in Ooty and not Mumbai.
