List of Upcoming Bollywood Movies of 2017

The year begins with Shaad Ali’s romantic film “OK Jaanu,” a remake of Shaad’s guru Maniratnam’s “O Kadhal Kanmani” in Tamil starring Mammotty’s son Dulqar Salman and Nithya. The remake reunites the Aashiqui star pair Aditya Roy Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor and dwells on the live in relationship in urban India. The track list also boasts of Maniratnam’s own Bombay track Humma Humma.

“Raees” directed by Rahul Dholakia and starring Shah Rukh Khan Pakistani actress Mahira Khan and Nawazuddin Siddiqui in key roles is about the tug of war between a bootlegger played by Shah Rukh Khan and a tough cop by Nawazuddin Siddiqui. Mahira Khan plays the love interest of Khan while Sunny Leone adds to the oomph factor with her Laila main Laila remix. This year, Shah Rukh Khan will also be seen in Imtiaz Ali’s romantic drama “The Ring,” which has been shot across Europe. Including breathtaking Amsterdam, Prague and Istanbul with Anushka Sharma.

“Kaabil” directed by Sanjay Gupta for producer Rakesh Roshan stars Hrithik Roshan and Yami Gautam in the lead with the Roy brothers Ronit and Rohit together. It is a revenge drama in which both Hrithik and Yami play blind people in love with each other. Ronit and Rohit have been pitted together for the first time in their careers.

Rangoon directed by Vishal Bharadwaj and starring Saif Ali Khan, Kangana Ranaut with Shahid Kapoor is a “Casablanca” esque love story which gives us a history lesson on World War 2 and the cinema of the 1980s. It is actually Kangana’s first collaboration with Vishal and his second with Shahid Kapoor’s after “Kaminey” and Saif Ali’s after his role as Langda Tyagi.

In “Naam Shabana,” written and directed by Shivam Nair, you can see Taapsi Pannu in an endearing action packed role with Akshay Kumar. It is interesting to note that “Naam Shabana” is actually a prequel to Neeraj Pandey’s “Baby.” “Meri Pyari Bindu” produced by YRF and directed by Akshay Roy is a romantic film starring Ayushmann Khurana and Parineeti Chopra in the lead with Monica Dogra, Ravi Dubey, and Sanjay Mishra. Akshay Kumar is the new Bharat Kumar of Bollywood. Whether it was “Rustom,” “Airlift,” “Baby,” “Holiday” or “Gabbar,” the one thread which is common between all the films is patriotism. Manoj Kumar is well known for having done a multitude of patriotic movies. After essaying a powerful role of a naval officer in “Rustom,” Akshay is all set to do “Crack” with Neeraj Pandey, slated for release on the Independence Day weekend in 2017.

If you liked the star pair of Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt in “Student of The year” and “Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhaniya,” chances are that you will like their latest film together- “Badrinath Ki Dulhaniya” too. Directed by Shashank Khaitan and produced by Karan Johar, the film stars also Gauahar Khan besides Varun and Alia takes the rom-com franchise forward to Singapore with a recreated version of the Thanedaar chartbuster ‘Tamma Tamma,’ this time picturised on Varun Dhawan. You will hate Nawazuddin Siddique when you see him play the role of a teacher who becomes interested in his 14-year-old female student (Shweta Tripathi) in a small town in Gujarat. The film produced and directed by Shlok Sharma. Shweta Tripathi was last seen in “Masaan.”

You will see Varun Dhawan reprising Salman Khan’s twin act once again this year in the hit “Judwaa” franchise “Judwaa 2” directed by his father David Dhawan and produced by Sajid Nadiadwala with Jacqueline Fernandez and Taapsee as his muses. After Akira, Sonakshi Sinha will be seen once again in yet another woman-oriented drama called “Noor” directed by Sunhill Sippy with leading men Kanan Gill and Purab Kohli. Based on author Saba Imtiaz’s novel Karachi, You’re Killing Me, Sonakshi is all set to take the center stage as a journalist in this story originally written with a Pakistani backdrop.

Munna Michael”, starring Tiger Shroff, Naqwazuddin Siddiqui together for the first time with Nidhi Agerwal, this Sabbir Khan directorial sees “Tiger moon” walking through the Teen Batti chawl where his father Jackie Shroff grew up and reuniting with his “Heropanti” debut director for an ode to his idol Michael Jackson. After “Heropanti” and “Baaghi” Sabbir looks forward to a hat trick. “Reload” starring Siddharth Malhotra and Jacqueline Fernandez and directed by Raj Nidmoru and Krishna D.K., will carry forward the 2014 Hrithik Roshan-Katrina Kaif starrer “Bang Bang” franchise.

If you are a die-hard Salman Khan fan, who can’t wait to have more of him after “Sultan” this year, there is actually a double treat for you in the form of Kabir Khan’s “Tubelight” in which he has been teamed romantically opposite yet another foreign actress China’s Zhu Zhu, who is being introduced with this film besides Sohail Khan and “Tiger Zinda Hai” directed by Ali Abbas Zafar, his “Sultan” director, in which he has been teamed once again with his favorite muse Katrina Kaif. While “Tubelight,” which is a war drama set in the 60’s will be a hat trick for Salman and Kabir after “Ek Tha Tiger” and “Bajrangi Bhaijaan.”

Ashwini Iyer Tiwari who gave us that brilliant debut film as a director- “Nil Batta Sannatta” comes up again this year with the Ayushmann Khurrana-Kriti Sanon-Rajkummar Rao starrer “Bareilly Ki Barfi” which is a small town romcom, with Kriti Sanon playing a deglamorized role for B R Films. Though sequels were written off last year like “Force 2,” “Tum Bin 2” and “Rock On 2,”  Ramgopal Varma is all set to come up with the third edition of  the “Sarkaar” franchise, with “Sarkar 3” starring Amitabh Bachchan, Jackie Shroff, Manoj Bajpai, Ronit Roy, Amit Sadh and Yami Gautam.

Besides “Sarkar 3,” there are going to be two more sequels. They are Mrighdeep Singh Lamba’s “Fukrey 2” starring Richa Chaddha, Pulkit Samrat, (in a leaner avatar) Varun Sharma, Ali Fazal, and Manjot Singh. “Aankhen 2” starring Amitabh Bachchan, who leads the way in this sequel to the 2002 heist hit in a multi-star line up which includes Anil Kapoor, Arshad Warsi, and South actress Regina Cassandra. S. Shankar’s “2.0” starring Rajnikant, Akshay Kumar, and Amy Jackson, is the sci-fi sequel to the earlier hit “Robot” with Akshay Kumar as the adversary to Rajnikant. To be released in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu, a la “Kabaali,” it is the most expensive film ever made in India on the lines of “Baahubali.”

Though he was lying low after a series of flops like “Bombay Velvet,” “Tamasha” and “Roy”, Ranbir who bounced back with Karan Johar’s “Ae Dil Hai Hai Mushqil,” will be seen this year in not just one but two different films. They are the Sanjay Dutt biopic helmed by Rajkumar Hirani and “Jagga Jasoos” directed by Anurag Basu with Ranbir’s estranged leading lady Katrina Kaif. Ranbir had done a cameo in his P.K., along with Anushka Sharma for Rajkumar Hirani. It is interesting to note that both Sonam and Ranbir who were assisting Sanjay Leela Bhansali before they made their debut in his film “Saawaria” will be seen together in this film about the real-life story of the troubled times of Sanjay Dutt. The adventure romcom reunites Ranbir with his “Barfi” director and exes girl friends six years after “Rajneeti” promises exotic locales, 20 odd songs, thrills galore and Pritam’s score. Yet another biopic which is eagerly awaited is the “Haseena Parkar” biopic directed by Apoorva Lakhia with Shraddha Kapoor playing the role of Dawood’s sister Haseena. Her brother Siddhanth Kapoor incidentally plays the real-life role as her brother. Rahul Bose is all set to stage back to direction with “Poorna,” 15 years after his “Everyone Says I’m Fine” with the real story of a Telangana girl Malavanth Poorna, who became the youngest female to scale Mt. Everest in 2014.

There is the much-awaited sequel to “Baahubali -Baahubali: The Conclusion” directed by S.S.  Rajamouli with Prabhas, Anushka Shetty, Rana Daggupati and Tamannah Bhatia. Rana returns as the antagonist Bhallala Deva in this virtual reality spin off a film which is bigger, better and meaner. The theatrical rights have been reportedly sold for a whopping 45 crores INR in Tamil Nadu alone. Yet another grand film poised for release this year is Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s magnum opus “Padmavati” starring Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone with Shahid Kapoor. For a change, both Ranveer and Deepika do not play love interests. Shahid plays a royal for the first time and Aishwarya Rai will be seen in a guest appearance in this period drama which promises to be riveting.

“Jeena Isiika Naam Hai” starring Manjari Fadnis, Arbaaz aKhan, Himansh Kohli, Ashutosh Rana, Prem Chopra, Rati Agnihotri and Suprioya Pathak Kapoor is a social drama while “Chef” directed by Raja Krishna Menon, who had earlier directed “Airlift” will showcase Saif Ali Khan as a professional chef flaunting newly acquired culinary skills in “Chef” and is a remake of the celebrated Hollywood hit of the same name. The dramedy also marks the Bollywood debut of Padmapriya from the South as Saif’s estranged wife, while Akshay Kumar will be seen in “Jolly LLB 2,” the sequel of “Jolly LLB,”which had Arshad Warsi in the same role being reprised by Akshay Kumar. Huma Khan plays Akshay Kumar’s lady love.

Yet another issue based woman-centric film with the cause of woman empowerment awaiting release next year is “Secret Super Star” produced by Zee Talkies and Aamir Khan with Advait Chandan as the director and starring Zaira Wasim who played the younger kid sister in “Dangal.” The film also has Aamir Khan in a special appearance as an alcoholic. Dinesh Vijan who had made “Love Aaj Kal” and Fanny among others is turning a director with “Raabta” starring Sushant Singh Rajput and Kriti Sanon, who are reportedly having a real life romance too. 

After “Queen,” Kangana Ranaut is all set to impress the viewers with her film “Simran” as a 30-year old who stumbles upon a world of criminals. The film is directed by Hansal Mehta which Anees Bazmee will be seen helming the desi wedding comedy “Mubarakan” set in picturesque foreign locales. The film will also see Arjun Kapoor in a double role after Aurangazeb with his chacha Anil Kapoor. Ileana D’Cruz and Athiya Shetty will be seen in the film as Arjun’s romantic interests. Yet another biopic “Daddy” directed by Ashim Ahluwalia and starring Arjun Rampal in the title role with Farhan Akhtar also has Farhan Akhtar playing the role of “Dawood” while actor cum co-producer Arjun plays the role of the underworld Don Arun Gawli.

Ajay Devgn will bounce back with “Baadshaho” directed by Milan Luthria, with Emraan Hashmi Vidyut Jamwal, Ileana D’Cruz, Esha Gupta and Sanjay Mishra. You can watch Ajay in a light role after films like “Drishyam” and “Shivaay” in “Golmaal Again” directed by Rohit Shetty with Parineeti Chopra, Arshad Warsi, Tusshar Kapoor, Shreyas Talpade and Kunal Khemmu. After “3 Idiots” and “2 States,” writer Chetan Bhagat‘s Half Girl Friend has also been adapted into a film by director Mohit Suri. Starring Arjun Kapoor, Shraddha Kapoor and Rhea Chakraborty, the film has been shot in New York, Cape Town, Delhi, and Bihar. Shraddha will be seen strumming a guitar in this film which will have Arjun Kapoor playing a Bihari football player. Amol Gupte’s Sniff starring Khushmeet Gill is a children’s film with an eight-year-old spy superhero at its center.

“Poster Boys,” a remake of the Marathi hit of the same name with Shreyas Talpade as the director, has Sunny Deol, Bobby Deol and Shreyas himself. It is a comedy film about vasectomy. With Tadka, actor Prakash Raj is making his debut as a director in Hindi films with Nana Patekar, Ali Fazal, Taapsee Pannu and Shriya Saran. Behen Hogi Teri directed by Ajay K. Pannalal is a satire with Rajkummar Rao, Shruti Hassan, Gautam Gulati, Harry Tangri and Gulshan Grover. “Atithii in London” directed by Ashwini Dhir is a comedy starring Kartik Aryan, Pareshj Rawal, Kriti Kharbanda etc, while Hindi Medium directed by Saket Chaudhary stars Irrfan Khan and Saba Qamar. Irada directed by Aparna Singh stars Naseeruddin Shah, Arshad Warsi, Divya Dutta, Sagarika Ghatge and Sharad Kelkar while Machine directed by Abbas-Mustan sets out to introduce a newcomer called Mustafa who is the son of Abbas with Kiara Advani as his leading lady. Then there is the niche film “Viceroy’s House” directed by Gurindar Chaddha and starring Manish Dayal, Huma Qureshi and Om Puri in the lead.

As Bollywood was coming to grips with the tragic loss of two of its finest actors Irrfan Khan and Rishi Kapoor, tragedy struck once again as news broke out about the death of Sushanth Singh Rajput.  The news left everyone shell shocked as news reports about police finding his body at his Bandra residence in Mumbai.  Sushanth Singh Rajput committed suicide according to the police and further reports are awaited following the post mortem autopsy.

Sushanth Singh Rajput was a brilliant method actor who performed in some memorable movies like Kai Po Che!, Shuddh Desi Romance, M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story and his last film Chhichhore.  Sushanth was working on his next project Dil Behcare, which is a remake of the Hollywood movie and the best selling novel, The Fault In Our Stars.  As news about Sushanths demise came out, shocked celebrities reacted with disbelief and offered their condolences.

Sushanth Singh Rajput is believed to have taken the extreme step due his battle with depression.  Incidentally,  in the last movie he was seen in Chhichhore, he gives the message that suicide is not an option for anything and that there is so much in life to look forward.

Rishi Kapoor is known as one of the legends of Bollywood who was responsible for making Bollywood what it is today.  As the entire nation is coming to grips with the sudden demise of Irrfan Khan, Rishi Kapoor’s untimely demise is a heavy blow to the movie industry as well as the nation.  Fans and celebrities are still in shock from the news of Rishi Kapoor’s demise and it will surely take a while for the news to sink in.  Rishi Kapoor passed away in a hospital in Mumbai after losing a long battle with cancer.  

Rishi Kapoor hails from a clan who made its mark in Bollywood beginning with his father Raj Kapoor, who is revered as one of India’s most greatest and influential actors and filmmakers.  Rishi Kapoor is the second generation Kapoor to make his mark in the movie industry.  Rishi won a National Award for his debut role as a child artist in Mera Naam Joker (1970,) a movie which starred his father Raj Kapoor.  Rishi Kapoor was known as a heartthrob for playing romantic roles on the silver screen and has racked up some impressive hits as the lead actor like Rafoo Chakkar (1975,) Laila Majnu (1976,) Sargam (1979,) Karz (1980,) Prem Rog (1982,) Nagina (1986,) Chandni (1989,)  Heena (1991) and Honeymoon (1992.)

Rishi Kapoor moved on to playing supporting roles in the latter part of his career and gave us many notable performances.   Hum Tum (2004,) Fanaa (2006,) Namastey London (2007) and Love Aaj Kal (2009) are some of the famous films in which Rishi Kapoor’s performances are still cherished to date.

 

Rishi Kapoor left a proud legacy and his son Ranbir Kapoor will continue to carry the torch through his films.   India and Bollywood will miss its charming heartthrob Rishi Kapoor, but there is no doubt his family, friends and fans will continue to remember him through his films.

Irrfan Khan- An Ode To The Gentleman Actor

Irrfan Khan is one of Bollywood’s finest actors whose career spanned almost three decades.  Irrfan Khan brought multiple accolades to India and Indian cinema throughout his career by acting in Indian, British and Hollywood movies. The Angrezi Medium actor, sadly passed away in Mumbai owing to a sudden colon infection.  Khan recently battled with a neuroendocrine tumour and has announced his success against beating the cancer.  

Irrfan Khan is known for his offbeat and slice of life movies which make the viewers deeply reflect on life and philosophy.  Having made his debut with the Academy Award nominated movie Salaam Bombay! (1988,) Irrfan rose to prominence with his wide variety of roles he essayed throughout his career.  However, Irrfan Khan’s talent gained recognition with his portrayal of Paan Singh Tomar (2011) in the biopic movie of the same name.  Khan won the National Film Award for the best actor for his performance in Paan Singh Tomar.

Over the course of his career Irrfan Khan appeared in several Hollywood films like  The Warrior (2001,) The Namesake (2006,) The Darjeeling Limited (2007,) the Academy Award-winning film Slumdog Millionaire (2008,) New York, I Love You (2009,) The Amazing Spider-Man (2012,) Life of Pi (2012,) Jurassic World (2015) and Inferno (2016.) 

Some of Irrfan Khan’s best works came late into his career and they include movies like The Lunchbox (2013,) nominated for a BAFTA Award Haider (2014,) Gunday (2014,) Piku (2015) and Talvar (2015) and the critically acclaimed Hindi Medium (2017) which went on to become one of the biggest grossing movies of Bollywood before Irrfan Khan was diagnosed with cancer in 2018.

Irrfan Khan’s last movie was the recently released Angrezi Medium which hit the theaters earlier this year.  With the untimely and unfortunate demise of one of India’s finest actors, Irrfan Khan will leave a huge void in Indian cinema but there is no doubt that Irrfan Khan immortalized himself on the silver screens.  Indian Cinema will miss the maverick actor of modern Bollywood classics.

Nishabdham Trailer - Madhavan Starrer Promises An Intense Thriller

Nishabdham is an upcoming multilingual movie which stars Anushka Shetty and Madhavan in the lead roles. Directed by Hemant Madhukar, this film is jointly produced by T.G. Vishwa Prasad, Vivek Kuchibhotla and Kona Venkat. 

The trailer begins with an intense and ominous shot in the basement of a house in the U.S., showing a dead body and a terrified Sakshi (Anushka Shetty) turning towards the camera. The next shot shows a news anchor outside the house which is being referred to as a haunted house.  A visibly injured Sakshi is seen in a hospital bed trying to convince Maha (Anjali,) a cop that it was a ghost who committed the murder.  Maha believes it is Sakshi’s best friend Sonali (Shalini Pandey) who committed the crimes but it turns out she is already deceased and cremated.  The plot of the movie can be deduced from the rest of the trailer. Nishadham will be a movie where Sakshi and Maha race against time to connect the dots and uncover the killer.

Madhavan will be seen in an upcoming bilingual movie Rocketry: The Nambi Effect in which he will star alongside Simran Bagga.  The movie is based on the life of Nambi Narayan, a former scientist and aerospace engineer of the Indian Space Research Organisation who was accused of espionage.

Nishabdham stars Anushka as a mute artist and Madhavan as a musician in the lead roles while Hollywood’s Michael Madsen, Anjali, Subbaraju, Shalini Pandey and Srinivas Avasarala will appear in supporting roles.  Nishabdham is slated for a release worldwide, on April 2nd, 2020.

Hrithik Roshan delivered one of biggest hits of 2019 with War, a movie jam packed with action, fights and beautiful visuals.  Following the movie, Hrithik Roshan seems to have taken some time off to vacation with friends.

Hrithik Roshan posted a picture from his vacation where he can be seen walking barefoot on a grass lawn wearing a red t shirt and a white towel wrapped around like a  ‘lungi.’ The actor credited Ranveer Singh for the fashion inspiration.

It is well known that Ranveer Singh has a fondness to make style statements through his eccentric dressing styles.  Ranveer Singh earlier paired a white t shirt with a green lungi and Hrithik Roshan’s credit was a subtle hint towards that.

Needless to say, Ranveer Singh immediately responded with a comment on Hrithik’s Instagram post saying ‘sax’ god, a subtle nod to Hrithik  Roshan’s popularity and being on the list of the world’s sexiest men.

Hrithik Roshan will be working on Krrish 4, the next instalment of the Krrish franchise while Ranveer Singh will be seen in the upcoming Kapil Dev biopic 83.
