MEE MARATHI INTERVIEW

In this freewheeling interview at his office at Dadar, the young jeweler turned film producer tells JYOTHI VENKATESH that he is confident of the success of his film because the content is the star of his film.

Q) What exactly is your maiden venture as a producer- Ganu all about?

A) My film Ganu is about a 17-year-old adolescent boy called Ganu who is a brilliant student is the school who is infatuated by a documentary filmmaker ( Tejaswini Patel) who comes to his village to make a film and starts assisting her. There is also a parallel track featuring Ganu and his grandfather.

Q) You have cast new faces in your film. Are you not scared that your film will not be saleable at the box office?

A) My film may have new faces but I am banking on the content of my film which I feel is actually the biggest star for any film. Padmanabh, the boy who is playing the role of Ganu in my film has faced the camera for the first time in his life but he is not new to camera in the sense that he is a very popular face of the music reality show in Marathi- Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Little Champs of Zee Marathi. Tejaswini Patil is also not exactly new since she has acted in films before.

Q) How did you zero in on Tejaswini Patil for your film?

A) I had actually approached actresses like Sonalee Kulkarni and Urmila Kanetkar Kothari before I decided to cast Tejaswini. While Sonalee Kulkarni did not want to work with a crew of new producer and director and excused herself, Urmila agreed to be part of it initially when I had approached her but suggested quite a few changes in the script which actually helped me a lot but ultimately declined to be a part of the film.

Q) In how many days did you complete producing the film and what is the budget of your film?

A) Pritam Abhang is making his debut as a director with my film. I completed my film in around 29 days in exotic locales in Mumbai and Kolhapur on a budget of around 87 lakhs and intend ploughing 23 lakhs in P&A thus making the budget of my film 1 crore and 10 lakhs. I am planning to release Ganu on 3rd February this year.

Q) To prepare yourself as a producer, do you watch Marathi films? Who are your favorite directors as far as Marathi Cinema is concerned?

A) As I was very busy producing my film Ganu, I hardly could seize the time to watch Marathi or Hindi films. The only film which I watched recently was Priyanka Chopra’s Ventilator. The father-son relationship in the film literally overwhelmed me. My favorite directors in Marathi films are Ravi Jadhav and Sanjay Jadhav.

Q) What according to you ails Marathi Cinema today?

A) Though non-Maharashtrians are flocking to see films in Marathi, it is sad that the government is not asking theaters to agree to share the revenue with the producers like they do in the case of Hindi films. It is difficult for Marathi filmmakers to pay the rental to theaters to show their films.

Q) What next, after Ganu? Do you plan to make the transition from Marathi films to Hindi films too?

A) Why not? If I get the right opportunity, I will certainly. In fact, my next will be a bilingual in both Hindi as well as Marathi. I am also seriously thinking in terms of making a thriller. It will be a thriller and a remake of a Marathi hit, like Farhan Akhtar remade Don as Don 2 in Hindi. Though I faced a lot of challenges since I am making my debut as a producer with Ganu, hopefully, my net venture will be the easy cake walk as now I feel that I know the mathematics of film production after a swift ride to the industry. Though now I am basically I am into the business of jewelry, I plan to focus slowly and steadily into film production.
